Tennessee Shines is taking a summer break until August 18. Join us for our fall season featuring acts like Malcolm Holcombe, Miss Tess and the Talkbacks, Van Eaton, Bombadil, Greg Trooper, Motel Rodeo and more.

You can still tune in Monday nights at 7pm and Saturday nights at 10pm for rebroadcasted shows. Tune in this Monday for the Bluegrass collabaration of Jim Lauderdale, Alex Leach, and Joe Rose and East Tennessee poetry from Dawn Coppock.

“Much Ado About Nothing,” a comedy by William Shakespeare, will be performed by the Tennessee Stage Company, under the direction of Tom Parkhill, at the Blount County Public Library. The play will be performed indoors for your air-conditioned comfort – a luxury not available to play-goers during the bard’s lifetime.

The Tennessee Stage Company, since 1989, is dedicated to providing quality entertainment that is affordable and accessible to all. TSC also performs “Much Ado” and “Titus Andronicus” on alternating nights during weekends at Market Square. According to Parkhill, the cast enjoy their annual appearance at the Blount County Public Library where they perform to an appreciative audience each year.

Free and open to the public, the program is sponsored by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

Art Exhibit at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Gallery, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37918. Free and open to the public. Opening reception July 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; artists’ talks at 6:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through August 2014.

+ Scherry Samuels | Samuels’ work is consistently cheerful and upbeat. Using vibrant color with particular attention to harmonies and color trails, she leads the viewer's eye through her paintings. Richness and saturation of color are vital to her work.

Samuels has a degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Six years ago she began pursuing her desire to paint with oils, and as her skill grew and her style developed, she began showing her work. She had a large solo show in Maryland. She now lives in Knoxville and is a member of the Knoxville Arts and Cultural Alliance. Some of her work is currently on display in the Mayor's office.

+ Kelly Hider | This series is about the possible presence of supernatural entities, both alien and deceased, and conversely the possibility of spiritual, fateful forces discussed in various theologies.

Influenced by the work of many contemporary artists who stage photographs, religious iconography, and even television shows from pop culture such as Star Trek and the X-Files, this cinematic work takes place in natural settings, places for contemplation as well as vulnerability.

Hider received her BFA from SUNY Brockport in 2007 and an MFA from the University of Tennessee in 2011. She has had solo exhibitions at the University of Rochester and at SUNY Brockport in Rochester, NY, The Ewing Gallery and Gallery 1010 in Knoxville, TN, and the Blackberry Farm Gallery at the Clayton Arts Center in Maryville, TN. Hider recently participated in group exhibitions at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh, NC, the St. Louis Artist Guild, St. Louis, MO, and Ground Floor Gallery in Nashville, TN. She also had an artist residency at MadOnArts in France. She currently teaches art history and studio courses at Walters State Community College and at Pellissippi State Community College. She is a founding member of the Vacuum Shop Studios.

The Rose Center Council for the Arts is ecstatic to announce its 23rd Annual Summer Players production to be the time-traveling classic, “A Wrinkle in Time”. Adapted from the novel by Madeleine L’Engle, this science fantasy story follows a young girl named Meg who travels through time and space with her younger brother Charles and her friend Calvin. One of Shakespeare’s earliest tragedies, and far and away his darkest, most bloody play , “Titus Andronicus, is like an Elizabethan horror movie. Interestingly, it was also Shakespeare’s most popular play during his lifetime. The story rests on a struggle for control of the Roman Empire but the play is awash in blood – beheadings, mutilations and horrible crimes against humanity. This play is not for the faint of heart. “These words are razors to my wounded heart.”

This most perfect of romantic comedies centers on Shakespeare’s wittiest lovers, Beatrice and Benedick, two people determined to avoid the foolishness of love at all costs! The verbal fireworks between these two make up some of Shakespeare’s best writing. Along the way we meet more lovers, distraught fathers, villains and the 16th century’s answer to the Three Stooges – Dogberry and the Watch. Rose Center is pleased to announce “An Omega Exhibit,” an exhibition of the works of artist Dr. R. Earl Cleveland. The exhibit will be on display in the newly renovated Edith Davis Gallery at Rose Center in Morristown through July 31st. The public is invited to an opening reception Sunday, July 13, from 2-4 pm. Dr. Cleveland will give a gallery talk during the reception.

Dr. Cleveland, Professor Emeritus at Carson-Newman University, has had more than one hundred regional and national exhibitions. He is an archival art restorer with thirty years’ experience, and has had numerous professional articles published, as well as six books.

Stephen Hicks Exhibit: "Dragons and Ancient Ones"

Artist's Statement:
"Having a great love and admiration for our ancestral past, I was guided in the direction of recreating ancient masks. My vision of what they would look like if uncovered after hundreds of years is how I wanted them to appear. Beliefs are as one in my mind when it comes to masks--all cultures come together in my creations. I believe creativity is the greatest gift we have been given.

Dragons have captured the imagination of man for millennia. The Dragon was master of all elements of nature and can take many forms. Dragons represent the primal forces in nature and the universe. They are one of the most complex and universal symbols on earth.

In masks we see the many faces of the human condition. The act of masking transcends cultural differences. They herald death and rebirth in rites of passage. They ensure successful harvests, fertility, and prosperity throughout the year. Masks create a link to the past, family identity, and hereditary rights. In religious rituals the mask often becomes the spirit being represented, or is a medium through which the spirit communicates."

Bliss Home is pleased to present print maker, Callie Farmer, for July's First Friday. Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, July 4th from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary Steamboat Sandwiches will be provided and Callie's art will be featured for the month of July.

Callie’s July exhibit will feature nature-inspired art that incorporates the techniques of both printmaking and gouache. Callie creates enhanced depth and movement with each piece by observing the colors, textures and patterns found in nature. While etching her plates, Callie has learned how to vary the size and scale to create another level of depth in her work. The awareness of Callie’s objective and added knowledge challenges her to achieve different levels of transparency and layering.

The Tomato Head’s charitable donation program, Loving Spoonful, is a partnership between East Tennessee non-profits, regional craft breweries and the restaurant with a percentage of the proceeds raised going to the community partner of the month. For the month of July, the Clarence Brown Theatre (CBT) will be the beneficiary of the program.

Throughout July: (Breaking Bread Fundraiser) A portion of the proceeds from the sale of any Flour Head Bakery bread from either Tomato Head location goes to the CBT;
Tuesday, July 22: (Pint Night Fundraiser featuring Yazoo Brewing Company) The CBT will receive a portion of the proceeds from any brewery;
Tuesday, July 29: (Sandwich Day Fundraiser) A portion of the proceeds from every special Loving Spoonful sandwich sold goes to the theatre.

During the fundraisers, The Tomato Head patrons can register at either location to win a drawing for two (2) CBT 40th Anniversary Season Preview subscriptions, a swag bag with CBT and The Tomato Head merchandise, and a Nashville brewery tour for two complete with an overnight stay in a hotel. The total value of the price is $1,000.
