The District Gallery is pleased to present Mask by sculptor Nan Jacobsohn. In her second showing at the gallery, Jacobsohn evokes the primal in her latest collection of striking animal masks. Exploring sculpture in its most original form, Jacobsohn’s work gives way to endless possibilities, both tactile and sacred, ancient yet contemporary. The use of masks for ritual and ceremonial purposes has been a human practice since antiquity, intimately linked with animal iconography. From the ancient cave paintings in France to the monumental totem images of the Northwest, artists have attributed to their fellow creatures powers and qualities both natural and magical. “I consider them, perhaps, guardian spirits,” Jacobsohn says. Working in ceramic and mixed media, Jacobsohn expresses the distinctive features of each creature with textural and stylistic elements, and captures the essence of their spirit. “I love the fact that you connect directly with the clay with your hands, and it responds almost like a living thing,” says Jacobsohn. With their primal power incarnated in clay, her masks are brought alive.

Broadway Studios And Gallery presents Jan Lynch "A Retrospective" from in memorial of the 20th anniversary of his death. Jan Lynch, who died from AIDS in 1996, was a prolific photographer from the 1980's till the mid 1990's. He was raised and worked mostly in Knoxville.

Opening reception will be held on First Friday October 7th from 5-10pm. Light refreshments will be served. Parking is on premises.

Closing reception will be held Friday, October 28th from 5-9ish with a print sale and silent auction

His work has been seen worldwide through various means and publications that primarily feature LGBTQ communities and interests. Lynch has been compared to Robert Mapplethorpe who was another gay photographer from his era. But Lynch's work is Southern and Appalachian in nature which only Knoxville could provide. Much of his work is based on the sensuality of the male form in the outdoors in wide variety of locales around the Fort Sanders and UT area. He also made photographs that depicted demonstrations, the community at large and celebrities that were related to LGBTQ community.

This event is open to the general public yet a separate room will be designated for the "mature" work. This event is supported by many people including Ed White, official archivist, biographer, and close friend of Lynch and Tim Hinkle, owner of many original prints who has graciously allowed us to use. This exhibit is also sponsored by Hope Center which provides, at no charge, caring support and assistance to all individuals and families living with HIV. Donations will be taken at the door and select prints will be sold with all proceeds going to the Hope Center.

It’s opening night of Broadway’s newest play, and the wealthy producer is throwing a lavish party at her Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a collection of theatre insiders (including the excitable playwright, the unstable director, and the pill-popping leading lady) await the reviews. Toss in an acerbic theatre critic and an insecure TV actor, and you have a hilarious recipe for the narcissism, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre.

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is exhibiting over 70 silk paintings by 36 national and international artists in two exhibitions. The exhibitions are in conjunction with the Silk Painter International’s (SPIN) biennial conference “Silk in Transition” being held at Arrowmont October 7-15, 2016. Arrowmont invites the public to view the exhibitions and attend the reception. Admission is free.

The SPIN Signature Members Exhibition showcases the work of nine distinguished SPIN members who were invited for inclusion in this exhibit. The exhibit will be on view during the duration of the conference only. Silk Painters International (SPIN) is an international organization of silk artists, painters, practitioners and educators. Their mission is to establish silk painting as a recognized art form by encouraging and promoting the collecting, displaying and production of silk art at the highest level.

The three-day Tennessee Fall Homecoming is one of the nation's largest and most authentic music and folk festivals.

Each day, all day, musicians perform on five rustic outdoor stages, filling the air with the sounds of traditional mountain, folk, Bluegrass, Gospel, old-time and Americana music throughout the grounds. The weekend includes demonstrations of pioneer skills, a large craft fair with authentic Appalachian artisans, and traditional Southern foods. The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its Fall Porch Sale starting Thursday, October 6, and running for about two weeks. The Porch Sale features outdated stock, seconds, student crafts and unjuried work by members of the Craft Center. It’s an excellent time to get great deals. There will also be baked goods for sale.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been fulfilling its mission by promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for 40 years. Currently the center has about 70 crafters who sell in the shop.

Knoxville’s largest Halloween event features 12 nights of safe and not-too-scary fun scheduled over three weekends; Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 6-9, and continuing Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 13-16 and Oct. 20-23, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. each evening.

BOO! at the Zoo, a Halloween tradition for 30 years, is a family event featuring trick-or-treating through the zoo along the BOO! Trail, the Chick-fil-A Monster Mash tent with fun that’s perfect for preschool and elementary-aged event-goers, friendly costumed characters and entertainers throughout the zoo, and the only “haunted” carousel in East Tennessee, the Scary-Go-Round. (How can you tell it’s haunted? It goes backwards, of course.)
