Meandering Mythologies is a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Knoxville natives, Timothy Massey and Gary Monroe.

Timothy Massey is an Associate Professor of Art and Gallery Director at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. He received his BFA at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in Printmaking and Drawing, and his MFA in Printmaking at The Ohio State University in Columbus. He has an extensive national exhibition record, and recently had a solo exhibition titled "Apocrypha and Other Half-Truths," at the Soloman Gallery, Youngstown State University in Ohio.

Gary Monroe is an artist from Knoxville, Tennessee who has exhibited nationally since the 1980’s. Most recently Monroe’s work has been featured in one-person exhibitions at the Estel Gallery, Nashville, TN, in 2011; the Clayton Center for the Arts at Maryville College in 2011; the Leu Art Gallery at Belmont University, Nashville, TN in 2009; and the Cue Art Foundation, New York, NY, in 2006. Notable group exhibitions include “Art of the South 2015” curated by Wayne White at Memphis College of Art, 2015; “The 7 Borders” at Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, 2013; The Diane and Sandy Besser Collection at The deYoung Museum, San Francisco, CA , 2007/08; Knoxville and Vicinity: Dialogues at UTK Ewing Gallery, Knoxville, TN , 2007; Thresholds: Expressions of Art & Spiritual Life curated by Eleanor Heartney. The MLK Gallery of Arts Tribute will kick-off the 2017 King Week Celebration. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission is partnering with the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville to provide this annual exhibition. The Galley of Arts Tribute is a juried exhibition developed to recognize local artists and most importantly to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The exhibit will feature works by local artists reflecting the themes of Unity, Community, Love, Racial Reconciliation, Social Justice, and Civil Rights.

Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths: "Beautiful Iron" in the Balcony gallery
Members of the Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths are pleased to present an exhibition of fine, hand-forged architectural ironwork. The exhibition will include a variety of items for the home including gates, grills, sculpture, furniture, lighting, fireplace equipment, and door hardware. The show will be of interest to the general public as well as interior designers, architects, and artists. Artist Blacksmiths include Joe Babb, Ron Nichols, Brad Greenwood, Ron Nichols, Mike Rose, and others.

With a goal of preserving and promoting the exciting art of blacksmithing, the Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths strives to educate and involve both men and women, young and old. AACB was founded in 1965 by Jud Nelson, Joe Humble, Joe Neely, A.P. Billingsley, and Bill Planzer. It is a nonprofit organization and an affiliate of the Artist-Blacksmith’s Association of North America. They regularly host demonstrations, workshops, and classes in Middle and Eastern TN, and Western NC, and have meetings throughout the year. The O’Connor Senior Center Painters: Breaking Ground - What You Want to See in the downstairs gallery
O’Connor Senior Center Painters present a new exhibition of more than 40 watercolors, oils, and acrylics entitled “Breaking Ground - What You Want to See” featuring more than ten artists. Each Wednesday, the O’Connor Painters meet at the O’Connor Senior Center to learn, work, and share under the tutelage of local artist Ann Birdwell, who teaches watercolors, oils, and acrylics. For several of the O’Connor Painters, attending class and seeing their work come to life from a blank canvas is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Others have come to class to refine their technique and to learn from Ms. Birdwell while sharing life experiences with the group. Recent works by mixed-media artist Lynnda Tenpenny and fiber artist Julia Malia will be on display. An opening reception for the featured artists will begin at 5:30 p.m., January 6, during Downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk, with complimentary refreshments, and music performed by Carl Gombert.

Award-winning artist Lynnda Tenpenny creates colorful mixed media pieces using painted and stamped papers, handmade papers, leaf prints, fibers and various texture mediums. Her work involves layers and textures, representative of layers of meaning and of life. Lynnda’s collectors often say that her work makes them feel joyful and that they see new things every time they look at her work.

As a fiber artist specializing in wearable art, Julia Malia uses a variety of fibers and techniques. The styles of her original designs are usually either classical or folk-style in nature, drawing inspiration from historic or ancient themes. Garment designs are often based around her family’s Irish and Scottish roots, but she also favors Japanese kimono garment shapes. Rich textures and colors are central her life and work, and she utilizes techniques that combine and enhance color variegations.

This exhibition showcases the diversity of styles and approaches used today within the field of contemporary graphic illustration in Slovenia. The more than 50 artists on display are alumni of the Independent Biennial and have won multiple national and international awards and grants for their work. Slovenia, a member of the European Union, is located in Central Europe at the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea.

In recognition of the fact that modern technological trends in illustration have eclipsed more traditional ways of visual depiction for the public, the Biennial of Slovene Independent Illustrators, established in 2007, seeks to redefine long-established concepts. The Biennial supports and promotes a wide variety of media and art forms, including digital work; but in order to be assessable to the public abroad, this particular exhibit emphasizes printed forms. Our hope is to provoke an open discussion about contemporary art and culture. The project is supported by Kino Šiska Ljubljana, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, the Ministry of Culture in Ljubljana, and the Slovene Consulate in Tennessee. The public opening of the exhibition begins at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 18, with light refreshments and remarks. Following the exhibition opening will be a special showing of “Quarry Project—Tennessee,” an exterior projection by artists Kate Katomski and Judd Mulkerin at 7:00 p.m. at the Knoxville Museum of Art.

East Tennessee marble is prized the world over. Rock of Ages: East Tennessee’s Marble Industry, a new exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society, offers a first-time look into the industry that launched the rock’s fame and crowned Knoxville as the Marble City.

The marble industry was once an important sector of East Tennessee’s economy. By the mid- 1850s, East Tennessee marble from Knox County had been chosen for the interiors of the Tennessee State Capitol and marble from Hawkins County was being installed inside the new House and Senate wings of the United States Capitol. In the decades that followed, East Tennessee’s varicolored marble was sought by architects and patrons for the interiors of a variety of public buildings: state capitol buildings, courthouses, city halls. Tennessee marble would soon also be ordered for high traffic railroad terminal flooring across the United States and Canada. The exhibition includes more than two dozen artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of Tennessee’s unique marble story.

A world-class visual arts exhibition of large-scale outdoor sculpture which enliven downtown Knoxville, the McGhee Tyson Airport and Oak Ridge.
