Tennessee Artists Association: 50 Years of Artistic Excellence: From the Past into the Future
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at The Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 5-27, 2022. A free reception with the artists will take place on Friday, August 5, from 5:00-9:00 PM. Most of the works will be for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition by visiting in person or the online shop at www.knoxalliance.store.
This new exhibition celebrates Tennessee Artist's Association 50th anniversary as the area's oldest member-supported arts organization.
TAA began in 1972 with five members who met for coffee: Jerry Hester, an artist and art teacher, was instrumental in getting the group started with Nancy Hendrix, Randy Laws, Shannon Bays, Nancy Davis and Beverly Prince. Highlights of the first year included an art workshop at Coker Creek and a Spring Show at Concord Park. By 1974, TAA had increased its membership to 35 members. Show chair Virginia Woods helped secure a yearly fall show at West Town Mall which continued until the late 90's. Throughout the 1970's, TAA added shows at Dogwood Arts festivals, Christmas shows at West Town Mall, juried shows at Rechenbach's Art Store, the Knoxville Mayor's Office and the Dulin Gallery. By 1978, the Tennessee Artists Association had over 230 members from 34 cities in Tennessee and remained the only one of its kind in Knoxville. Social issues and concerns were highlighted by shows at the University of Tennessee's School of Law and the Knoxville Women's Center. In the 1980's, shows expanded to include Silver Dollar City in Pigeon Forge, Eastgate Mall in Chattanooga, Fort Henry Mall in Kingsport, Children's Hospital Fantasy of Trees, and 100 Oaks Mall in Nashville. The 1990's saw TAA's continued interest in social causes with shows supporting Children's Hospital, the Scholastic Arts program for students in grades 7-12 in fourteen counties in East Tennessee, and the sponsorship of a Boy Scout Explorer Post in the Arts.
TAA meets monthly at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. These meetings are free and open to anyone and include practical art demonstrations, discussions, and opportunities for individual artists to get involved in learning, community and shows. TAA welcomes guests to their rotating gallery and artist studio at the Emporium in Suite 106.

Tax-free weekend: Food & Food Ingredients
Category: Culinary arts, food and Festivals, special events
This year, Tennessee has not one, but three tax free holidays! They range from clothing and school supplies to groceries and even gun safety equipment. Dates:
July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023: Gun Safes & Safety Equipment
August 1, 2022 – August 31, 2022: Food & Food Ingredients
Qualifying gun safes for the sales tax holiday have locking containers equipped with a padlock, key lock, combination lock or other device to store guns securely. This sales tax holiday runs until June 2023, so there is plenty of time to make your purchases.
The new grocery sales tax holiday is welcome especially with the rising cost of food. Best of all, this sales tax holiday will last the entire month of August. A good rule of thumb for this sales tax holiday is if you can find it in a grocery store, it’s included. However, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy, dietary supplements and prepared food will not be tax free. Keep in mind that food purchased at a “micro market or vending machine” is subject to sales tax. The state estimates this sales tax holiday will save Tennesseans more than $80 million.

Oak Ridge Art Center: The Fabric of Memory
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
Memories are the fabric of our lives. Our experiences are woven together on the warp of time to create a tapestry of meaning: sometimes coming together to form a clear picture in one’s mind; sometimes waiting to be resolved, or unraveling. For some, fabric can hold memories – your grandmother’s quilt, the dress you wore to prom, the baby booties you knit for your first child, even the wine stain on your best tablecloth. Each represents a memory spun into the fabric of one’s life.
Dates: July 9, 2022 – August 19, 2022
