This year, Tennessee has not one, but three tax free holidays! They range from clothing and school supplies to groceries and even gun safety equipment. Dates:

July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023: Gun Safes & Safety Equipment
August 1, 2022 – August 31, 2022: Food & Food Ingredients

Qualifying gun safes for the sales tax holiday have locking containers equipped with a padlock, key lock, combination lock or other device to store guns securely. This sales tax holiday runs until June 2023, so there is plenty of time to make your purchases.

The new grocery sales tax holiday is welcome especially with the rising cost of food. Best of all, this sales tax holiday will last the entire month of August. A good rule of thumb for this sales tax holiday is if you can find it in a grocery store, it’s included. However, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy, dietary supplements and prepared food will not be tax free. Keep in mind that food purchased at a “micro market or vending machine” is subject to sales tax. The state estimates this sales tax holiday will save Tennesseans more than $80 million.

Featuring works by father and son!

Local artists, Alan M. Jones and his son, Xavier M. Jones, will display their paintings in the Burlington Branch meeting room for the month of August. Alan Jones is a local artist who paints under the pseudonym “Theophilus.” Alan Jones is a former Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church in Clinton, Tennessee, Art Director at the Literacy Imperative Center in Knoxville, TN, and has also worked as Research Associate with the Community Partnership Center of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. Alan is also an accomplished freelance artist. His paintings reflect Black heritage, social statement, and biblical themes in an effort to strengthen his community. Blacks in The Bible and Urban Inner Visions are two projects he continues to explore. He has completed Church Murals, community murals and portraits as well. He also designed the new Black Cultural Center Brick Frieze and the tile floor for the University of Tennessee.

Ijams is partnering with Hope Irwin to bring you a weekly yoga class on Mondays from 6-7 pm at the Visitor Center. This class may be outdoors on the back patio or indoors during inclement weather, and will happen rain or shine!

Classes will target flexibility, strength, and balance by using variations of Vinyasa, Hatha, and Power flows. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

Classes are $10 at the door. Please bring a yoga mat with you.

We are pleased to welcome you to the Theatre to enjoy a LIVE concert featuring House Organist Freddie Brabson on the Tennessee Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer. Freddie will be joined on stage by Jodie Manross, a folk and blues singer-songwriter who splits her time between Knoxville and Rugby, Tennessee. Jodie has opened for artists such as BB King, John Mayer, Blind Boys of Alabama, Keb' Mo', Leon Russell, Sugarland, Norman Blake, Hays Carl, and Jennifer Nettles. She was a Bonnaroo artist and lived and performed in New York City for five years before moving back to Tennessee. She has had music featured on FOX TV's hit show "So You Think You Can Dance," and her music is used by various dance companies throughout the United States.

COMMA Art Group was founded in 2004 by award-winning former and current art teachers who meet weekly to create plein air artwork. One week before our Celebration, our third annual art auction will go live online. We're excited over the coming weeks to share some of the pieces on social media, so stay tuned there, and once the auction goes live, we will send out an email with instructions on how to bid. The art will all be displayed for viewing at the Celebration, and the auction will close at 9 PM on August 3.

A native of Virginia, Kathy Holland attended the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and printmaking. The following summer she studied with master wood-engraver Blair Hughes-Stanton at the Central School of Art and Design in London, England. Holland has maintained her professional studio practice since graduation, exhibiting drawings, etchings, relief prints, and paintings in juried regional, national, and international competitions and solo shows. Since moving to East Tennessee in 1997, Holland has been an active member of the Art Market Gallery, a longstanding artist-run cooperative gallery of original art and fine craft in Knoxville, TN. Her work is included in public and private collections in the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Uruguay. Her home and studio are in Oak Ridge. Bobbie Crews Thurston
Born and raised in NW Ohio, Bobbie lives and works in Knoxville, TN. A self-taught painter, she earned her fine art degree in painting and drawing at the University of Tennessee School of Art in 2007 as the mom in the class. The value of good skills, content and good design are immensely important to her work. Painting professionally since 1993 Bobbie loves painting portraits of people and her paintings of antique automobiles are produced much like her oil portraits. They are composed of layers of color in an additive and reductive process to create a likeness, but also capturing character, attitude and light. She has been showing her automotive paintings in Concours d’Elegance shows since 2013 and is a member of the Oil Painters of America. She is currently showing in the Nationals of the OPA in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Clay Thurston
A wildlife and nature photographer for over 35 years, I’ve been lucky to travel the world recording wildlife and nature in their natural habitats. Sharing these experiences through workshops, programs and exhibitions makes me want to photograph even more. I enjoy recording the personalities of the animals that I photograph... nature has provided me with many hours of entertainment and amazement. I feel fortunate to be able to witness things that others will never see in person. I truly enjoy what I do and photography is as much therapy as it is work! I now use Digital cameras and lenses from 12mm - 600mm. I do all of my own printing, matting and framing... using only archival inks, papers, mats and framing techniques. My photographs will be around for many years to come. I have been honored to present my work to the North American Nature Photographers Association and to many other fine photography and civic organizations. I’m available for programs, critiques, workshops, classes and individual instruction. This show however, is very different from any show that I have ever done. All of these images are a direct result of Covid.
