Growing up in Marietta, Georgia, I had a deep passion for art, particularly for drawing animals. I was so passionate about it that I even did my first dog portrait in middle school. My passion for color and gesture only grew as I attended The University of Tennessee and earned my BFA. I've since moved to Chattanooga, where I live with my husband and daughter, Della.

My professional career in photography has helped me to hone in on details, color, and composition, which in turn has enhanced my ability to capture the unique personalities of pets on paper. I'm equally drawn to realism and detail, and the vibrancy and movement of color and paint strokes. Together, they create pieces that speak to the viewer.

Visiting scholar Kathleen Fitzpatrick (Michigan State University) will give a public talk titled “Open Infrastructure and the Future of Knowledge Production" as part of the UT Humanities Center’s “Dialogues” digital humanities mini-series within its 2023-2024 Distinguished Lecture Series.

New platforms for online scholarly communication have been designed to return control of the processes of knowledge dissemination to scholars and their institutions, breaking the corporate stranglehold on the publishing. Those platforms, however, frequently depend on infrastructures that are themselves corporate-owned and controlled. As a result, the long-term sustainability of scholarly work relies at the deepest levels on the continued interest and goodwill of infrastructure providers (such as Amazon Web Services) whose goals and values are radically different from our own. This talk will explore what our dependence on corporate communications infrastructure may mean for the future of scholarly communication, as well as ways that academic institutions might become better able to take control of their own infrastructure needs.

The lecture is free and open to the public and is held in Hodges Library’s auditorium on the UT Knoxville campus. Public parking is available in the Volunteer Hall parking garage for our off-campus visitors. Everyone is welcome!

About the Speaker:
Kathleen Fitzpatrick is Director of Digital Humanities and Professor of English at Michigan State University, where she also directs MESH, a research and development unit focused on the future of scholarly communication. She is project director of Humanities Commons, an open-access, open-source network serving nearly 40,000 scholars and practitioners across the humanities and around the world, and she is author of several books, including Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019) and Planned Obsolescence: Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy (NYU Press, 2011). She is president of the board of directors of the Educopia Institute, and she is past president of the Association for Computers and the Humanities.

About the Series:
The UT Humanities Center's Distinguished Lecture Series brings acclaimed humanities scholars and renowned artists to the Knoxville campus for research-based conversations with UT faculty and graduate students and to give a public talk on a topic of the speaker's choosing. Speakers are nominated and hosted by faculty from our nine affiliated arts and humanities departments. Because only speakers with exceptional records of publication and research activity are eligible to receive a nomination as a visiting scholar, the program brings to campus some of the most cutting-edge and prolific intellectuals in the humanities today. The Gesualdo Six is an award-winning British vocal ensemble comprising some of the UK's finest consort singers, directed by Owain Park. Praised for their imaginative programming and impeccable blend, the ensemble formed in 2014 for a performance of Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories in Cambridge and has gone on to perform at numerous major festivals across UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. Notable highlights include a concert as part of the distinguished Deutschland Radio Debut Series in 2018, and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, London Mozart Players, Luxmuralis, William Barton and Matilda Lloyd.

The ensemble often incorporates educational work into its activities, holding workshops for choirs and composers and giving concerts alongside local performers. The Gesualdo Six has curated two Composition Competitions, with the 2019 edition attracting entries from more than three hundred composers around the world. The group has recently commissioned new works from Joanna Ward and Kerensa Briggs, alongside a coronasolfege from Héloïse Werner. Videos of the ensemble performing a diverse selection of works filmed in Ely Cathedral have been watched by millions online. The group released their debut recording English Motets on Hyperion Records in early 2018 to critical acclaim, followed by a festive album of seasonal favorites in late 2019, Christmas. G6's latest recording is an album of compline-themed music titled Fading.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from November 3-25, 2023, including the biennial Master Woodworkers Show, November 3-5. A free gathering with the artists will take place on Friday, November 3, from 4:00-9:00 PM, followed by special weekend hours including Saturday, November 4, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM and Sunday, November 5, 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.

This new exhibition features a collection of wall hangings, scarves, pillows, jewelry, should bags and apparel, all of which are based on traditional quilt patterns reimagined in a contemporary way. Sewing techniques include Mexican smocking, satin stitching, sprigging, and applique to create pieces that are all one-of-a-kind.

I am a lifelong fiber/fabric artist whose clothing designs are vibrant contemporary reinventions/reinterpretations and/or reflections of patterns found in Rococo and Art Deco architecture, coupled with and incorporating references to Appalachian quilting patterns and stitching. I work typically with used/recycled denim for its suppleness, hidden charm, and strength. Denim has demonstrated a willingness to be transformed, both in appearance and texture, creating a beautiful finale between the way it was originally designed and the way it looks after I have reinvented its form into a jacket, a handbag, a skirt, and/or perhaps a dress or even throw pillow. Much like a painter or sculptor, my designs can be recognized in my finished clothing, as much of each piece is hand stitched with reflective attention to details, such as thread colors and weight, embellishments such as beads, unique buttons and closures, and most importantly, interesting patterns within patterns. Some of my creations incorporate antique material reinvented for contemporary use.

Tim Bridges studied at the University of Tennessee, Tennessee Technological University, and the School of Fashion Design of Boston. He worked as a visual merchandising coordinator for several major department stores and spent several years designing costumes and sets for theater productions in Florida and Tennessee. He also designed wedding dresses and formal party wear. Bridges now devotes his time and skills to creating wearable art and home accessories in his inimitable style. He is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and recently participated in an exhibit at the Appalachian Regional Commission in Washington as well as exhibitions sponsored by the Guild at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.

This portfolio of work honors the family culture of Oaxaca, Mexico. During Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead), families visit the graves of their deceased loved ones and pray for them. People decorate graves and themselves with marigolds and flowers. They dress themselves in skull masks and skeletons to celebrate life, death, and rebirth. Spirits of ancestors are invited to coexist with their relatives in the earthly world. The spirits are enticed back through altars of their old belongings, personal sugar skulls, and the love of their family. Both the spiritual and celebratory nature of Dia de Muertos are explored in this portfolio. The photographer seeks to share the beauty of the celebration, and the light in the living as they entertain their ancestors.

Scott Carpenter is an amateur photographer and native of Greeneville, TN. He has traveled extensively throughout the world, photographing people and cultural moments. He loves to photograph because photography invites us to understand each other. Photography is a way to share the world as he sees it: in each serene moment there is beauty. In each face there is light. Carpenter’s photography discovers the soul of the person and illuminates their inner beauty.

This new exhibition features an assortment of beautiful and unique photographic perspectives of Knoxville, Nashville, and the Smoky Mountains by local photographer Phil Savage. Most images will be in panoramic format, created by combining almost a hundred single images in order to form one breathtaking and memorable work of art.

My statement is simple in concept but quite challenging in execution: I want to create beautiful and compelling images by always keeping in mind my personal goal of making the ordinary EXTRAORDINARY.
