  • November 2, 2024

Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing

Pellissippi Community College presents the 10th annual Young Creative Writer's Workshop, happening Saturday, November 2nd at our Strawberry Plains campus,
7201 Strawberry Plains Pike, Knoxville, TN 37914

The YCWW is a free, day-long event open to all but geared mainly to area high school, middle school, and PSCC students with an interest in creative writing.

Our keynote speaker/featured workshop leader is best-selling Harper-Collins writer, Angela Jackson Brown, author of multiple novels, including Homeward, When Stars Rain Down and The Light Always Breaks.

Morning coffee, pastries/fruit, and lunch will be provided, along with a packet and "goody bag" for each attendee. Door prizes will be given during lunch.

Musical entertainment this year is provided by Kelle Jolly, an incredibly talented "Afrilachian-Georgia-lina-Peach" embracing a rich blend of cultural influences.

Workshops offered this year include fiction, spoken-word poetry, playwriting and publication. This year's poetry workshop will be taught by Joseph Woods, aka “Black Atticus,” hailed as “one of the most intelligent and heartfelt voices of the new southern hip hop movement” and the current Poet Laureate of Knoxville. We will feature a "Writer's Room" segment where attendees may interact one-on-one with our workshop leaders and other professional writers from the community.

Our "Appalachian Arts" space will feature artisans, craftspeople and interpreters who will offer attendees a glimpse of the rich culture of our area. If you ever wished to learn to quilt or to immerse yourself in area history, this is a great opportunity!

We will host a "Showcase" at the end of the day where attendees may read/perform original works before an audience of peers, instructors and family members.

NEW THIS YEAR is a special generative workshop from Highlander Center’s Ashby Combahee: “How Historical Investigation Shapes Historical Fiction Narratives.”

Be part of our “Afrilachian Journeys” and Music/History Trivia Stations where you can learn about prominent Afrilachians from our area and win prizes!

Knoxville Children's Theatre: Beowulf The First Avenger

Category: Kids, family, Literature, spoken word, writing and Theatre

Conceived and written by Alex Drinnen and Dennis E. Perkins, this exciting rendition tells the tale of the great warrior Beowulf who saves the Kingdom of the Danes from not only the greedy ravages of the monster Grendel but also his equally fierce and vengeful mother. After his victories, Beowulf returns to his homeland to become King of his people where he will face monsters of his very own. Staged by KCT Artistic Director, Dennis E. Perkins, the epic scope of this tale about heroics, ethics, and the goodness of Kings will come to life through a visually dramatic presentation in the tradition of Total Theatre.

The play is performed by fourteen talented young actors ages 11 to 16. The show is directed by KCT Artistic Director Dennis E. Perkins and designed by fourteen student designers ages 11 to 16. KCT is East Tennessee’s leading producer of plays for children and families.

The play will be performed Thursdays and Fridays at 7PM, Saturdays at 1pm and Sundays at 3pm.
