Knoxville Civil War Roundtable: Living History Weekend
Category: Festivals, special events, History, heritage and Kids, family
Fort Dickerson, the Civil War earthworks atop a hill on Knoxville’s southern riverfront, will once again be populated with soldiers in Blue and Gray as the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable and the City of Knoxville’s Parks and Recreation Department, present a Living History weekend on November 9th and 10th, 2024. Local reenacting units, historians, and authors will commemorate the siege and battle of Knoxville that took place in November 1863.
To visit Fort Dickerson drive toward Sevierville on Chapman Highway (US-441). After crossing the Henley Street Bridge, proceed about 7/10 of a mile south of the Tennessee River, and turn right at the 3rd signal light. The entrance to the park is clearly marked.
The Living History Weekend runs from 10 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday November 9th, 2024, and from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday November 10th, 2024. Activities will include living history campsites, infantry drilling with rifle firing demonstrations, a Civil War medical and surgical exhibit, ladies’ fashions, battle reenactments, cannon firings, and a salute to all veterans including an American flag retirement ceremony. Visitors are invited to park for free at “Wee Care Shoppe” parking lot at 2537 Chapman Highway, across from Shoney’s, where they can board a free shuttle to Fort Dickerson courtesy of the Knoxville’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
Special Note: Bring your American flags that are no longer in condition to be flown or displayed to the event so the members of the 8th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry can properly retire them. There will be a public flag retirement ceremony after the skirmish on both days of the event. We encourage everyone to bring their weathered flags.

Meet Birds of Prey from the Owl Ridge Raptor Center.
In-Person Program on November 9, 10:00 AM - noon, at UT Arboretum, 901 S. Illinois Ave, Oak Ridge. Join us as Lisa Thomison, co-founder of Owl Ridge Raptor Center, introduces the audience to some of their feathered ambassadors.
Sponsored by the UT Arboretum Society, tickets to this event are limited to 100. Please register soon at www.utarboretumsociety.org under “programs.” Please contact Michelle Campanis at mcampani@utk.edu for any questions or registration issues.
This is a free program, but a donation box will be available. All donations will be given to Owl Ridge Raptor Center to support their work.
Owl Ridge Raptor Center is a nonprofit organization that takes care of injured and orphaned birds of prey. These include owls, hawks, falcons, vultures and eagles.
While Thomison was working in the laboratory field, she discovered and volunteered for the Clinch River Raptor Center in Claxton where she learned about birds of prey. When the leaders of the organization retired, she applied for her state permit. Owl Ridge Raptor Center now holds both state and federal permits for education and rehab. When working with birds of prey, it is required that the organization holds a federal permit as these birds are protected at the federal and state levels.

The Bottom: Liquid Blackness by Chase Williamson
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Reception: Nov 09, 2024, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
At The Bottom, 2340 E Magnolia Ave, Knoxville, TN 37917
Artist Statement: "In my paintings, I delve into the profound connection between Black women and the healing elements exuded by the Southern Black Garden and memorial waters. Using oil, glitter, and familial fabric, I create a revitalized perspective on what it means to exist in historical southern regions charged with painful remembrance. By situating Black femmes amidst vivid florals and racialized landscapes, I expose life that is not predetermined by the framed perspectives of the social world."
Chase Williamson is an MFA candidate in Painting + Drawing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She centers the interconnection of Blackness, womanhood, & marginalized identity through her painted compositions. Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, her southern living experience is a major propeller for her work. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Art degree from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 2022, where she studied Studio Art & Psychology. Chase is fiercely passionate about creating mirrored representation; during undergrad, she painted the cover and interior artwork for the children’s book, “Creative God, Colorful Us”.
