Clayton Center for the Arts: American Patchwork Quartet
Category: Music
November 12 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
AMERICAN PATCHWORK QUARTET (APQ), led by multi-Grammy award-winning guitarist/vocalist Clay Ross, binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication,
country twang, West African hypnotics, and East Asian ornamentation. APQ’s sound is a masterful confluence of tradition and innovation, transcending culture, politics, and ideology. A southern-born roots music aficionado, Ross is also the founder of the world-renowned Gullah group Ranky Tanky. In APQ, Ross intertwines with other Grammy-winning artists: Falguni Shah, an eleventh-generation Hindustani classical vocalist, Yasushi Nakamura, an internationally acclaimed Issei jazz bassist, and Clarence Penn, a drumming protégée of Ellis Marsalis whose fibers were honed by African American church traditions. APQ resonates as a potent symbol of unity in diversity. It stands testament to the notion that, from a collage of varied backgrounds, a coherent and beautiful whole can be fashioned. Mirroring America’s cultural mosaic, APQ stitches together a story that’s both intricate and resilient. The fabric of their music is genuine—it neither feigns tolerance nor presents an overly- embellished image of unity. Instead, each carefully chosen piece dives deep into America’s patchwork soul and shares the joys, sorrows, and unwavering hope of a nation crafted by shared dreams and diverse histories.

University of TN Humanities Dept: Religion vs. Science? The Scopes Trial and Beyond
Category: Lecture, panel
Religion vs. Science? The Scopes Trial and Beyond, Tuesday, November 12, 2024 4pm to 5:30pm, John C Hodges Library, 1015 Volunteer Blvd, rm 100.
The 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial often stands as a classic case demonstrating a fundamental conflict between religious and scientific worldviews. However, such characterizations mask the deeper complexities involved both in the trial and other historical engagements between religious and scientific perspectives. This panel brings together four scholars of religious studies to discuss how academic approaches to religion, culture, science, and media help move beyond the conflict thesis, demonstrating avenues for collaboration and understanding between diverse stakeholders as the 21st century progresses.
Panel Participants:
Dr. Joseph Witt: Associate Professor of Religious Studies, focusing Religion, the Natural World, and Appalachia
Dr. David Kline: Senior Lecturer of Religious Studies, focusing on Religion, Media, and Political and Contextual Christian Thought
Dr. Megan Bryson: Associate Professor of Religious Studies, focusing on Asian Religions and Scientific Discourse
Dr. Erin Darby: Associate Professor of Religious Studies, focusing on Judaism and the interpretation of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament

Maple Hall: Knoxvillians Aiming for the White House
Tuesday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Maple Hall, 414 S. Gay Street
On the next second Tuesday (Nov. 12), we’ll be back at Maple Hall. One week after the election, it’ll be hard to think about anything else. No matter what happens, we’ll try to put it in perspective with a survey of Knoxvillians who ran for president over the last couple of centuries. There are at least five who ran with a real reason to think they might prevail, and the grave of one of them is visible from the back of the bar. We'll fill it out with a survey of presidents who have visited Knoxville over the last 190 years. Free program. Food and drink available for purchase.

The Bottom: Liquid Blackness by Chase Williamson
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Reception: Nov 09, 2024, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
At The Bottom, 2340 E Magnolia Ave, Knoxville, TN 37917
Artist Statement: "In my paintings, I delve into the profound connection between Black women and the healing elements exuded by the Southern Black Garden and memorial waters. Using oil, glitter, and familial fabric, I create a revitalized perspective on what it means to exist in historical southern regions charged with painful remembrance. By situating Black femmes amidst vivid florals and racialized landscapes, I expose life that is not predetermined by the framed perspectives of the social world."
Chase Williamson is an MFA candidate in Painting + Drawing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She centers the interconnection of Blackness, womanhood, & marginalized identity through her painted compositions. Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, her southern living experience is a major propeller for her work. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Art degree from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 2022, where she studied Studio Art & Psychology. Chase is fiercely passionate about creating mirrored representation; during undergrad, she painted the cover and interior artwork for the children’s book, “Creative God, Colorful Us”.
