Storytelling has been a part of human history since the beginning of time, and the Appalachian HorrorFest, produced by Small Raven Media, continues that tradition with a night of bloodcurdling tales. The Appalachian Mountains, known for their eerie and mysterious stories, serve as the perfect backdrop for this unique event. Whether these stories are rooted in truth or simply crafted to keep children in line, they continue to fascinate and frighten.

At Appalachian HorrorFest, you’ll feel like you’re sitting on an old front porch, listening to your granddad pass down spooky stories he heard from his own grandad. Talented storytellers will weave haunting tales from both near and far, making it an evening of global and local folklore.
Gather your friends and family, slow down, turn off your phone, and immerse yourself in an unforgettable night of world-class storytelling, music, and more. If you love a good scary story, this event is for you! Don’t miss it on October 12, 2024, at Central Cinema in Knoxville.

Knoxville Writers' Guild: Images and Language in Writing for Film

Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing

October 12 Workshop
Insights and exercises on how dialogue, images, and setting work together in writing for film by an award-winning screenwriter, with Gerald Wood.

We say and believe that film is a visual medium, but images are equally essential in all our writing: from poetry to the theater. How do we use images differently when we write for the screen? And how do those changes influence the dialogue in movies?

In this workshop, first we will focus on how radically expressive images are in film. We will briefly discuss how Appalachia, for example, is represented in the movies. But our exercise will focus on how writers can suggest the mood and even ideas in the physical place we want to represent. We will practice making a setting “talk” in different ways through visuals.

Less obvious but equally valuable is how visuals require a unique use of language in film. Our second exercise will be to demonstrate how dialogue is given nuance and complexity by visual contexts like close-up, reaction, and POV shots. We also will see that—for good or ill—in film a visual can make speech redundant, even unnecessary.

As we have time, we will also consider the implications of trying to influence the director and cinematographer to follow our suggestions about camera distances and angles, even action beyond the frame.

10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Central United Methodist Church, 201 3rd Avenue

Greg Howser
Greg Howser is attracted to the exquisiteness of creatures. His work serves as surrogates created from experiences growing up as a Southerner. He creates Märchen narratives about people, places and legends based on local, regional and personal lore. The subjects are anthropomorphic animals or the human form layered with symbolically rich objects commonly found in fairytales. Howser teaches at East Tennessee State University and Northeast State Community College. He is a board member of the Art Depot of Abingdon, Virginia and has exhibited throughout the United States. He has worked in private collections as well as public, international collections.
