East Tennessee Historical Society: A Conversation with Victor Ashe and Dick Krieg

Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

The Knoxville Representatives Reponsible for Tennessee's Quick Passage of the 26th Amendment
October 30, 2024 @ 12:00 p.m.

Tennessee ratified the 26th Amendment—which lowered the voting age to eighteen—on the very first day. Why? Because of the work and foresight of the state legislature’s two youngest members in 1971—Victor Ashe and Dick Krieg, who both represented Knoxville districts. More than fifty years later, they will share their stories about being young crusaders in the legislature and their work of empowering young people to politically participate in their local communities.

Knoxville Museum of Art: Cocktails & Conversation, Amy Boone-McCreesh

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and Lecture, panel

Wednesday, October 30 • 5:30-7:30 pm

Visual artist and educator Amy Boone-McCreesh, from Baltimore, MD, is a current Artist in Residence at Loghaven Artist Residency in Knoxville, TN. Much like the artist Jo Sandman, Boone-McCreesh works in experimental methods exploring the use of non-conventional materials. Although their results are vastly different, Sandman leans more minimalistic and Boone-McCreesh is a self-proclaimed maximalist, their method for arriving at these conclusions follows a similar path. Additionally, both artists have had the unique opportunity to explore their creative freedom through time spent at artists’ retreats such as Black Mountain College and Loghaven.

Amy Boone-McCreesh was born on Loring Air Force Base in Maine. Her upbringing instilled in her an interest in the connections between aesthetic leanings within economic and cultural status. She has a heightened visual awareness of the ways people and spaces flaunt class, taste, and access. Amy received her BFA from Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and MFA from Towson University in Maryland, and shortly thereafter was awarded a two-year Hamiltonian Artist Fellowship in Washington, DC. Amy has been based in Baltimore, Maryland for the last fifteen years. Her work has been included in exhibitions across the country. In addition to her own studio practice, Amy has a committed relationship to visual arts education, running the web–based studio visit series INERTIA, and is adjunct faculty at MICA and Towson University.

Light refreshments and a cash bar are available beginning at 5:30 pm, and the lecture begins promptly at 6:00 pm.

Free and open to the public!

UT Downtown Gallery: William Downs

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

UT DOWNTOWN GALLERY | 106 S. GAY ST.
FIRST FRIDAYS | NOVEMBER 1, DECEMBER 6, 5-9PM

William Downs’ artwork explores themes of ambiguity and distortion viewed through repetition and representation of the human body. His drawings reveal “feelings of anxiety, fear, joy, angst” or desire with compositions inspired by Cezanne that appear dream-like or otherworldly. He often depicts “people who train their bodies to do inhuman things like run a marathon or bend and contort their bodies,” in surreal-like, panoramic scenes. Multiple figures are layered with warped perspective, creating contrasting areas of compositional ambiguity and sharp focus.

UT Downtown Gallery, 106 S. Gay Street. Hours: W-F: 11am - 6pm, Sat: 10am - 3p. For more information: ewing@utk.edu | https://downtown.utk.edu
