DCHA Distinguished Lecture Series: Visualizing the Frankenstein Variorum

Monday, Oct. 28
DCHA Distinguished Lecture Series: “Visualizing the Frankenstein Variorum” with Elisa Beshero-Bondar
When: 3:30 PM ET
At Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts, Cherokee Mills, suite 223, 2230 Sutherland Ave., Knoxville 37919
Or via livestream at tiny.utk.edu/Beshero-Bondar

https://calendar.utk.edu/event/elisa-beshero-bondar-visualizing-the-frankenstein-variorum

The Frankenstein Variorum team has completed work on a digital scholarly edition that compares five distinct versions of the novel Frankenstein. Working with the Frankenstein Variorum‘s edition files, we can study precisely where and how much the novel changed over five distinct instantiations from 1816 to 1831. Our encoded data invites us to visualize the edition’s moments of alignment, divergence, and gaps where material was missing or removed. This presentation shares a “big picture” view of Frankenstein’s changes over time using two variations of eXtensible Markup Language (XML): images drawn in Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) from our data encoded in TEI, the language of the Text Encoding Initiative.

This talk is part of the Dialogues digital humanities miniseries of the Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts' 2024-25 Distiguished Lecture Series. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held at the Denbo Center at Cherokee Mills. Free parking is available in the lots on the north and west sides of the building. Everyone is welcome!

A sharp, witty, funny, and ferocious play that explores how “not to be a victim,” and how to use your body as a weapon. The classes become a channel for rage, trauma, confusion, anxiety and desire. The play explores the way sexual assault steals your sense of belonging, and how these women might get that back.

The subjects are anthropomorphic animals or the human form layered with symbolically rich objects commonly found in fairytales. Howser teaches at East Tennessee State University and Northeast State Community College. He is a board member of the Art Depot of Abingdon, Virginia and has exhibited throughout the United States. He has worked in private collections as well as public, international collections.
