On April 1, the first Knoxville Civil War Trails Marker was installed at Old Gray Cemetery at 543 North Broadway. Civil War Trails is a multi-state program that identifies, interprets, and creates driving tours of both the great campaigns and the lesser-known Civil War sites in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia and Tennessee. The National Trust for Historic Preservation identified the Civil War Trails program as one of the most successful and sustainable heritage tourism programs in the nation. A1LabArts and Big Ears Productions presents a concert series of innovative composers and sound artists. All concerts will be in the ArtSpace of A1LabArts, located in the Fireproof Building at 201 Randolph and Magnolia. These evenings, billed as a "True 21st Century Music Series" will cover distinctive genres which have arisen since the atomic expansion of abstract art in the 1950's. Shock value and "difficult music" are tired cliches; nuanced forms have evolved, influencing movie scores, pop stars, and children's toys. Each evening concert will focus on one nuanced genre, including Laptop, Musique Concrete, Vintage Analog, Ambient, Acoustic, and Net-based.

Featuring the works of Knoxville photographer and this year's Dogwood Art Festival Print Competition winner, Phil Savage. To celebrate "First Friday" on April 3, the Museum will stay open from 3-9 p.m. with free admission to all exhibits including the Downtown Knoxville, a New Perspective exhibition and the ETHS signature exhibition Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee. Phil Savage, a local gymnastics coach, has been taking pictures since he was a teenager. Interestingly enough, the Dogwood Art Festival print competition was the first art contest Savage had entered. His photograph "Woodruff's on Gay Street, Knoxville, TN" was selected by the public from hundreds of artwork pieces to become the official Dogwood Arts Festival's 2009 Limited Edition Fine Art Print. The photograph is a digitally colored and edited panoramic image of the Woodruff building on Gay Street, taken early one Sunday morning in downtown Knoxville. Prints of the winning photograph will be available for purchase throughout the duration of the show at the East Tennessee History Center. Phil Savage will be available for signing of the limited edition prints at the History Center from noon to 5 p.m. on April 17 and 18.

The 2009 exhibit will be housed in an elegant new location at 128 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. In addition to the exhibit's Grand Opening to the public that will occur on April 3 (5-10 pm), there will be a ticketed Dogwood Gala preview party the night before featuring the Regional Fine Arts Exhibition, opportunity to meet many of the artists, catered fare, live music, and a tour of the spectacular three story loft residence. The exhibit will include artist demonstrations and a fundraising art raffle.

Der Rouska Schoeka (The Red Shoes) is a shadow puppet show based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson. The Exhibition will run from April 3-25.

Der Rouska Schoeka is comprised of shadow puppets, paper puppet paraphernalia and mixed media installation elements. The exhibition addresses issues of desire, loss and the problematic nature of mistaking attractive appearances for beautiful depths. The Red Shoes has taken on various interpretations throughout history. This production focuses on issues of illusion, alienation, transformation and the shadowy side of human nature.
