Knoxville Museum of Art: Jane South: Shifting Structures

1932.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

Jane South has achieved international attention for her innovative mixed-media constructions that blur the lines between drawing, sculpture, installation art, and architecture. Born in Manchester, England, she draws inspiration from the industrial urban character of her hometown and of her adopted home in Brooklyn, New York, where she has resided since 1989. Using little more than a scalpel and colored inks, South transforms flat sheets of paper into a range of sculptural objects whose shapes mirror the contemporary urban environment. She cuts, folds, paints, and attaches each element to create forms resembling vents, containers, ladders, scaffolding, and other functional, industrially-fabricated structures. Working without a preconceived plan, the artist assembles these individual parts in elaborate groupings that thrust outward into space as dynamic sculptural assemblages. The slotted cut-outs on the surfaces of South’s drawings make visible their internal structure, and create intricate shadows that extend into the surrounding environment.

The public is invited to a free exhibition preview at the KMA Thursday, August 26 from 7 to 9pm. Artist Jane South will be on hand to meet with guests, who can also enjoy the opening of Contemporary Focus 2010 on the same evening. More information is available at www.janesouth.com.

Hanson Gallery: Installation of Metalwork and Sculpture by Abraham Pardee

  • August 7, 2010 — August 31, 2010

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

ARTIST RECEPTION: Saturday, August 7 from 1-3 p.m.

Abraham Pardee is a 2010 graduate of Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville/Smithville, receiving his BFA in metals. Calling on his formal training in psychology and mixing those studies with the study of metals as craft, Abraham constructs metal objects which are, for him, symbols of human interaction. Using forged steel as his foundation, Abe adds design and artistic statement through the use of other materials such as wood, copper, bronze and brass. His sculptures represent both a reflection of himself... and the way in which he sees the world.

Bijou Theatre: Dos Equis Comedy Series featuring Sinbad and Patton Oswalt

1760.jpg

Category: Theatre

Friday, July 16 and Saturday, August 7
The Dos Equis Comedy Series presents Sinbad and Patton Oswalt at the Bijou Theatre. Sinbad’s name recalls the literary legend that symbolizes strength, adventure and optimism. "I renamed myself Sinbad because Sinbad is bad. He could hang with rogues and with kings. He didn’t have the strength of Hercules, but he could outwit anyone." Sinbad (the comedian) became well-known in the late 1980s and 1990s; being featured on his own HBO specials, appearing on several television series, and starring in the films Houseguest, First Kid and Jingle All the Way. Sinbad never tells jokes - "I don’t know any," he admits - but rather tells real-life stories, reliving his material as he remembers it. Psychologically, he jams us, poking holes in our lifestyles. Sinbad’s comedy is explosive; his phrasing is manic, musical and right on time.

Patton Oswalt is an actor/writer/comedian who has been headlining comedy clubs all over the U.S. since 1996. Oswalt’s stand-up comedy covers topics ranging from pop culture frivolity (such as comic book supervillains and 1980s glam metal) to deeper social issues like American excess, materialism, Mesopotamian cuneiform script, foreign policy and religion. His most recent album was recorded in Feb. 2009 and it premiered on Comedy Central as Patton Oswalt: My Weakness is Strong on August 23, 2009. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Museum of Appalachia: Worldwide Cantilever Barn Celebration

1938.jpg
  • August 7, 2010
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Category: Festivals, special events and History, heritage

The Museum of Appalachia will take part in a world-wide celebration of Swiss heritage barns in the United States, Canada and Switzerland. Visitors can tour the Museum’s historic Cantilever Barn in person, and see eight other barns in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Indiana, Switzerland and Canada via internet connection through skype.com. The virtual event is included with regular admission. In preparing for the event, the Museum developed wi-fi capability so it could take part in the webcasts—making the Museum café an internet “hot spot.” The Cantilever Barn was moved to the Museum in May 1977 from Seymour, Tenn. An old farm was being subdivided into lots for homes, and the barn was removed shortly before the bulldozers came to demolish it. The barn is a two-pen style with overhangs on all four sides. On August 7, visitors can step inside the pens for a close look at construction techniques.

The Museum is located 16 miles north of Knoxville at I-75, exit 122, then one mile east. For more information, call 865-494-7680, e-mail museum@museumofappalachia.org, or visit the web site at www.museumofappalachia.org.

Theatre Knoxville Downtown: Sherlock's Last Case

1607.jpg

Category: Theatre

By Charles Marowitz, Directed by Patrick McCray. Winner of the Louis B. Mayer Award. Created by an American-born playwright-director who has become one of the most celebrated figures in the modern British theatre, this diabolically clever (and frequently funny) play was first presented as part of the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles and went to Broadway in 1987. It was produced at the Nederlander Theatre with Frank Langella as Sherlock Holmes and Donal Donnelly as Doctor Watson. Illuminating aspects to the master sleuth's character heretofore ignored, the play is both true to the spirit of the original and a totally fresh and absorbing theatrical excursion.

Theatre Knoxville Downtown, 319 N. Gay St, Knoxville, TN 37917. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10 plus fees for Thursday & Sunday; $15 plus fees for Friday & Saturday. For information: 865-544-1999, www.theatreknoxville.com. For tickets: 865-523-7521, www.KnoxTIX.com
