Get a chance to meet nationally-renowned children's poet Jack Prelutsky, author of beloved books including Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant, A Pizza the Size of the Sun, and The Dragons are Singing Tonight, among many others. Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with Knox County Public Library, and UT's Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature to present the esteemed author to East Tennessee for a series of events for all ages. Prelutsky will make several public appearances around town the starting October 6. For over 30 years, Jack Prelutsky’s inventive poems have inspired legions of children to fall in love with poetry. His outrageously silly poems have tickled even the most stubborn funny bones, while his darker verses have spooked countless late-night readers. Prelutsky has written more than 40 children’s books, often working with well-known illustrators such as Garth Williams, Arnold Lobel, and Marilyn Hafner. Prelutsky has also edited collections of poetry for children, including The 20th Century Children’s Poetry Treasury. Prelutsky served as the Poetry Foundation’s Children’s Poet Laureate from 2006 to 2008.

Maestro Lucas Richman of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra collaborated with Prelutsky on his latest collection of poems, Behold The Bold Umbrellaphant, The collaboration provides a musical setting for 17 different characters in the anthology, and will be featured in the KSO's Family Concert on Oct. 10 in celebration of their 75th anniversary.

Prelutsky studied classical music when he was younger and also worked as a busboy, furniture mover, folk singer, and cab driver before he became a writer. He claims that he hated poetry in grade school because of the way it was taught, and has spent his career making poetry children will love.

The UT Downtown Gallery is proud to present the second in a series of fall exhibitions. Featured will be the art of a current member of the UT School of Art faculty and a former participant in the Visiting Artist in Residence program.
This month we are featuring, recent paintings by UT Professor of painting Marcia Goldenstein who joined the faculty in 1976, and New York artist Julia Jacquette, who taught at UT during the falll semester, 1995. The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition entitled “Frutos Latinos”, featuring works by Victor Beltran from Peru, Rafael Casco from Honduras, Eduardo Lozano and Dina Ruta from Argentina, Patricia Tinajero from Ecuador, and Jorge Yances from Colombia. The exhibition is coordinated by HoLa Hora Latina in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage month in Knoxville throughout September and October. This exhibition shows the diversity of media and style produced by contemporary artists who explore what it means to be Hispanic artists now living and working in the United States. The exhibition will be displayed in the Emporium Center from October 1-29, 2010, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on October 1 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra 75th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition, a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from artists throughout the East Tennessee region. The KSO, in partnership with the Alliance, developed this exhibition to display artwork inspired by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra in celebration of its 75th Anniversary season (2010-2011). Earlier this year, the KSO invited artists to attend a private symphony rehearsal at the Tennessee Theatre; as a result, the exhibition includes many works created specifically in honor of the KSO’s 75th Anniversary. The selected art features both traditional and non-traditional work, and will be exhibited in the Balcony at the Emporium Center from October 1-29. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on October 1 from 5:00-9:00 PM featuring a string quartet of the KSO from 5:00-6:30 PM. A brass quintet will perform just outside the Emporium from 5:30-6:30 PM as part of the Arts District Grand Opening Celebration along the 100 & 200 Blocks of Gay Street.
