One of the oldest student competitions in the United States, the exhibit will feature juried artworks in all media. The exhibit will open with a reception and awards ceremony on Friday, March 25, from 7:00-9:00 pm. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will feature live music and food donated by Knoxville-area establishments.

“Handler” is a story about forgiveness. Geordi has just been released from prison, and his wife is a devoted member of the Holiness Way sect. When Geordi unexpectedly handles snakes at a service for the first time, he’s bitten and dies. Three days later, he’s resurrected from his coffin. What is to become of Geordi now? What does this miracle bring?
Tickets are available at the Clayton Performing Arts Center Box Office 30 minutes before each show. The performances are free, but donations will be accepted at the door at the following rates: $8 for Pellissippi State students and faculty, $10 for area students and seniors, and $12 general admission. All proceeds go to the Pellissippi State Foundation to support the Theatre program and scholarships.

With the support of the TN Arts Commission, this production is free to the public. The plays were written by company members – all first-time playwrights – during a six-day workshop taught last October by DOUGLAS STEWART, Ed.D, an award-winning author, playwright, director and performer, specializing in social and political themes, and working with seniors in theatre. These six short works cover a variety of topics ranging from light-hearted satire on the pitfalls of modern technology to heart- breakingly personal stories of coping with illness and overcoming prejudice. A reception with light refreshments will begin at 7 PM, and open discussion of the plays will follow the performance. The performances are FREE but donations are appreciated. Foghorn Stringband plays old time string band music deeply rooted in the American folk tradition. They are highly regarded by traditional music lovers, and frequently perform with Dirk Powell, one of the country’s most renowned musicians of the genre, as the Dirk Powell Band. While they are committed to playing authentic old-time music, the members of Foghorn Stringband are not strict recreationists in costume; yet neither are they experimentalists of the digital age.

Join education director Jennifer Roder and volunteer Terry Uselton for a night hike at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge. We’ll learn a little about the constellations in the sky, as well as the stories that named them. We’ll even have telescopes available if you’d like to take a closer look. This program is recommended for adults and families with children over the age of five. Meet at Ijams at 6 p.m. and we’ll caravan to Seven Islands.

Foghorn Stringband plays old-time string band music deeply rooted in the American folk tradition. Stephen "Sammy" Lind's fiddle and Caleb Klauder's mandolin play tight unison lead lines supported by Peter Leone's three-finger banjo picking and anchored by the bedrock rhythms of Patrick Lind's rhythm guitar and the bass of Nadine Landry. The Foghorns play in unison, gathered around a single mic, no flashy picking or solos, carried along by their driving rhythms and fierce determination to keep traditional music alive and exciting for this and future generations. The band's genuine enthusiasm for the music is making them a major name on the folk and old-time music circuit.

Seven years ago, when Drew Holcomb graduated from college in Knoxville, TN he never expected he would spend his twenties touring the country playing music, but that is exactly what he and his wife Ellie, and his band, the Neighbors, have been doing since coming together in 2006. When not out on the road touring, they have recorded and released three independent albums, selling more than 35,000 records. And over the past half-decade Holcomb & the Neighbors have played more than 1,000 tour dates and garnered a massive following in the Southeast club scene, proving the undeniable authenticity of the band’s talent and genuine appeal to the masses.

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra celebrates 75 years of music during the 2010-2011 season! KSO Conductor Emeritus Kirk Trevor returns to the podium for the March installment of the Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series. Joining Maestro Trevor and the orchestra on stage will be his daughter, and renowned violinist, Chloe Trevor. The orchestra will also perform Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. An exhibit of nature photography by Becca Childress will be on display in the Visitor Center at Ijams Nature Center. Childress is a graduate of Appalachian State University where she received a BS in technical photography. She is also a former CAC AmeriCorps member on the Earth Flag team at Ijams. “I had the good fortune of working for two environmental non-profits after graduating: Ijams Nature Center and RiverLink,” says Childress. “I learned and grew working as an environmental educator, and consider myself extremely fortunate. These experiences offered some great photo opportunities as well.” The photos are for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to the nature center.
