The KSO will open the season with an All Beethoven program. The first half of the concert will feature his Coriolan Overture and Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor with Alon Goldstein. Following intermission the orchestra will perform Symphony No. 3, “Eroica.”

Singer-songwriter Dave Barnes formed friendships easily across demographic lines in his Mississippi hometown– a simple fact of life that would nonetheless guide his growth, individually and artistically. He shares his insights through lyrics, melody and humorous reflections on life’s absurdities.

Unleash your inner artist and help a deserving student go to college. At “Painting with a Purpose,” a joint effort by Pellissippi State Community College’s Alumni Association and Painting with a Twist, you can paint, laugh and munch on goodies, all the while knowing that you’re helping provide financial support to a Pellissippi State student.

Pellissippi State Alumni Association board members invite all alumni and friends of the college to the fundraiser, which takes place at Painting with a Twist, corner of Lovell Road and Murdock Drive.

The cost to participate is $35, but thanks to Painting with a Twist, $25 of that goes directly to the Alumni Scholarship fund.

Participants don’t have to bring a thing. Painting with a Twist supplies canvas, brushes, paint—even an instructor who will guide class members step by step as they create a painting titled “Dusk at the Pier.” Attendees can preview the painting at www.facebook.com/psccalumni.

Alumni Scholarships are awarded annually to a child or spouse of a Pellissippi State graduate to help students achieve the goal of furthering their education. The scholarship fund was created in fall 2010. Mark Cragle, a student in the Pellissippi State ’s Culinary Arts concentration, was the first recipient, and this event will raise money for future recipients.

Ijams Wee Ones: Friends with Fins: (Ages: 2- and 3-year-old with adult partner.) Get to know the underwater critters of the park that make their homes in the ponds of Ijams. Knoxville based musician Wendel Werner will appear in concert at The Arts Center in Athens. The concert is a fundraiser for debt retirement for The Arts Center. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $12 in advance and at the door.

Wendel Werner’s musical abilities cover a broad spectrum encompassing most every musical genre. He is a composer, director, recording artist, teacher and performer. He served as director for the Knoxville Children’s Show Choir, the Athens Area Children’s Choir, the Knoxville Showstoppers, and is currently director of the UT Singers, the university’s jazz choir. From 2002-2004 Werner served as director of Just In Time, a women’s a cappella jazz choir which he formed. He was named “Composer of the Year” by the Tennessee Piano Teachers Association, and was the featured entertainer for the Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies.

Jimi Hendrix’s wild, reverberating electric guitar rendition of the “Star
Spangled Banner” captivated the crowd at Woodstock in 1969. And the music
perfectly captured the struggles of a new generation. Hendrix was able to
effectively get his message across because music carries emotions, says
Larry Vincent, assistant professor of Music at Pellissippi State Community
College.

Vincent will use the electric guitar as the centerpiece of his upcoming
lecture “The Music of Revolution.” The presentation kicks off the 2011-2012
Faculty Lecture Series at Pellissippi State, and the community is invited to
hear the discussion.

The event is Sept. 22, 12:30-1:30 p.m., in the Clayton Performing Arts
Center on the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.

“Have you ever thought of what the world would look like right now if the
electric guitar had never been invented?” Vincent asks.

Music has impacted society in the United States and in other countries at
various times in history, he says. Highlights of his lecture include the use
of Frédéric Chopin’s piano compositions in Poland, the connection between
Richard Wagner and German nationalism, and the use of music to effect
political change in Latin America, South Africa, and the Arab world.

“What makes music such a powerful tool is that it conveys emotion, brings
people together, and can lead to the rejection or affirmation of a political
order,” according to Vincent.

In addition to the thought-provoking discussion, the audience will enjoy
live music: Vincent on his own electric guitar; Peggy Hinkle, Pellissippi
State Music instructor, on the piano; and Bill Brewer, the college’s Music
program coordinator, conducting a choir.

The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art presents the 2011 Artscapes auction in two parts: a Preview and Silent Auction Opening Tuesday, September 20 6-9pm, and Live Auction and Gala Dinner Friday, September 30 6:30pm-9:30pm.

Approximately 75 works of art will be on view at the KMA beginning September 20. Silent or live auction bids may be submitted in person or by phone in the museum gift shop until 5pm Friday, September 30. Throughout the run of the Silent Auction, visitors can pay a "buy it now" price if they want to acquire any work immediately.

Art can be viewed at the KMA website www.knoxart.org and at the Artscapes 2011 Facebook page, beginning in September. The auctions offer selected glass, painting, photography, sculpture, and ceramic. A wearable art section highlights the art of jewelry.

Tickets for the Preview and Silent Auction Opening on September 20 are $25 per person with food and wine presented by Chez Liberty. The Oak Ridge Art Center announces their annual juried, mixed media exhibition. The exhibition is intended to showcase exceptional work produced throughout our region.

CTK will present “Anne of Green Gables,” a warmly funny
and touchingly dramatic play based on the classic novel by
Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert are a lonely brother and sister,
who work tirelessly on their farm in rural Nova Scotia.
They decide to adopt a boy to help them, but Matthew
can’t resist an imaginative, headstrong girl he meets at
the orphanage. She is Anne Shirley, a fiercely independent
girl with red hair and freckles. Anne’s adventures with her
school friends, her on-again, off-again flirtation with
Gilbert Blythe, her struggles to fit into Canadian society,
and her triumphs as well as her failures are all brought
vividly to life by 18 remarkable young actors. In this
multi-layered, modern version, Anne’s story serves as
an escape for a young girl, reading the book, proving
the plot of “Anne of Green Gables” is as relevant today
than ever.
