Bijou Theatre: Brett Dennen with Blind Pilot

Category: Music

Brett Dennen’s wunderkind rise has been impressive. In 2004 Dennen released his self-titled debut, followed quickly by his sophomore LP So Much More (2006,) which spent months on the Billboard Heatseeker chart. The release drew the attention of John Mayer, for whom Dennen opened in 2006 and 2007. In 2008 the artist released his follow-up, Hope for the Hopeless, which debuted at #41 on the Billboard Top 200 and firmly established Dennen as a definitive new voice in modern songwriting. He’s toured with Dave Matthews, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and The John Butler Trio and has also become the go-to guy for some of the best and most artfully soundtracked contemporary TV shows. His songs have appeared on Scrubs, Grey’s Anatomy, and House among others. He'll be performing in Knoxville with Blind Pilot in October.

Jubilee Community Arts: Clyde Davenport and Charlie McCarroll

Old-Time and Bluegrass Fiddle
One of the most important figures in the southern mountain fiddle tradition is 90-year-old Clyde Davenport from Fentress County on the Cumberland Plateau. Following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and three of his brothers, all fiddlers, Davenport began playing before he was ten. His repertory emphasizes the spooky, eccentric solo fiddle tunes played for listening, too crooked to dance to, played in a gliding and graceful style. In 1992 the National Endowment for the Arts recognized Davenport with a National Heritage Award, and in 2007 he received the Tennessee Governor’s Folklife Heritage Award. Bobby Fulcher and Michael DeFosche will accompany Davenport.

76-year-old Charlie McCarroll is a strong and powerful fiddler specializing in the repertoire of his father, the great Kingston fiddler Jimmy McCarroll, playing in a bluegrass style only slightly more modern. Charlie has been featured on WBIR’s Heartland Series and on WDVX’s Music of the Cumberland Trail. His vast storehouse of tunes, earned through diligence, in face-to-face interaction, is beginning to thrill and fascinate followers and students of old-time fiddling. He remains ever ready to put his breakneck, hard-driving facilities to the test. Charlie says, “Daddy played a little different than me. He never did learn none of that grass.” Charlie will be joined by Michael DeFosche and Tony Thomas.

The Stella-Vees
$9 General Admission
$5 with Membership or student ID
Free for ages 17 and under

In their three previous Alive After Five performances, this 5-member blues band from Lexington, KY, was a big hit with the dancers, and we’re very pleased to have them return to stir up the dance floor with their swingin’ blues. They really know how to get everybody up on their feet with their straight ahead Chicago– and West Coast-style blues, reflecting influences of legendary bluesmen like T-Bone Walker, Little Walter, Magic Sam and Hollywood Fats.
