Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin are featured on September 24' Tennessee Shines.

She’s sweet and smoky with a flair for the dramatic. He’s a stoic multi-instrumentalist who’s backed a star-studded roster. Together, they make modern twang that harkens to a long-ago time. Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin are the Nashville-based husband-wife duo behind 1999’s unforgettable This Is Pulp Country and Kristi Rose Live in Holland. Fats Kaplin began playing music professionally at age 17 when he recorded and toured with Roy Bookbinder; a long stint with Tom Russell followed in the ‘80s, and when he moved to Nashville in 1992 at the insistence of pal Kevin Welch, his fame as a sideman grew exponentially. This summer Kaplin has been on the road with Jack White. We’re thrilled they’ll be playing together again on Tennessee Shines, bring “pulp country” to Knoxville.

Pellissippi State Community College marks National Hispanic Heritage Month with celebrations on Sept. 20 and Oct. 12 at the Hardin Valley Campus in West Knoxville.

The Sept. 20 presentation features dance groups performing in the Goins Building College Center. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. It includes the following scheduled performances:
5:15-6 p.m.—Knoxville Argentine Tango Society
6:15-7 p.m.—Academy Ballroom Latin Dance Ensemble
7:15-8:15 p.m.—Pablo Garzon and Serenatta, Romantic Latin Ensemble, of Nashville

On Oct. 12, the Core Ensemble performs its chamber music theatre work “Tres Vidas,” 7-8:30 p.m. at the Clayton Performing Arts Center. Chamber music theatre is a format developed by the Core Ensemble that blends theatrical narrative and chamber music performance.

“Tres Vidas” is a celebration of the life, times and work of three significant Latin American women: painter Frida Kahlo of Mexico, peasant activist Ruffina Amaya of El Salvador and poet Alfonsina Storni of Argentina.

He lived on the roof of a five-story apartment building in Mexico, and his room was so small that it contained little more than a bed, some canvases and his painting tools. It was from there, though, that African-American artist Harold Winslow created more than 1,300 pieces, securing a place in art history as a prolific chronicler of Mexican culture.

A collection of 50 of Winslow’s works will be shown at a special traveling art exhibit hosted by Pellissippi State Community College and the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. The works have been on tour since August 2011 at selected Kentucky and Tennessee colleges and universities.

Slated for display at Pellissippi State Sept. 19-Oct. 3, “Una Visión de la Mexicanidad”—“Mexicanidad” refers to the Mexican national identity and culture—offers a record of one artist’s experience in two cultures. Winslow, who was born in 1918 in Dayton, Ohio, moved to Mexico in 1940 in the hopes of escaping racism. He remained there until his death in 2001, at the age of 83.

This is an exhibition by hispanic artists that live and work in the United States, particularly in the southeast region and the Knoxville area.

This exhibition shows the diversity of the mediums and styles that these contemporary artists produce in their creative practices while questioning what it means to be a contemporary hispanic artist in the United 'States.

Pencil Pushed: exploring process and boundaries in drawing.
In this exhibition, the word pencil functions simply as a metaphor or symbol for drawing and its activity. The artists selected are known for their drawing or drawing activity as their primary means of expression and have either pushed the material, process, or boundary of conventional drawing. Media included will be video, sculpture, animation, installation, and of course, works on paper. This exhibition is neither a survey nor the definitive grouping of mark-making artists. It is more a conversation about artists who have and continue to explore these regions in drawing. The diversity of the exhibition will favor mid-career artists, but will range from emerging to late.

The Athens Area Council for the Arts is pleased to present “McMinn County en plein air, a collection of regional landscape paintings by Chris Ingram”, on exhibit from September 7 – October 31, 2012, at The Arts Center, 320 North White Street, Athens, Tennessee.

Venturing outdoors to paint requires the fortitude to withstand the elements and critters long enough to create a work of art that captures the fleeting effects of light as it moves across the landscape. And while the finished work may not have the finesse of a studio painting, these works do capture the atmosphere, color, expressiveness and rhythm of the scene.

The public is invited to meet the artist at an opening reception at The Arts Center on Friday, September 7, 2012 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The second floor Gallery at the U.S. Cellular Stage of the Bijou Theatre is
proud to present an exhibit of fine art photographs of the majestic vistas
and stunning wildlife of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The
exhibit includes prize-winning photos by local photographers Jim Ryan and
Roger Lee.

The purpose of the exhibit is to celebrate the preservation of the Smokies
by showcasing the beauty and wonder of this unique region. The gallery is
open to patrons who attend programs at the Bijou and, during regular
business hours, the general public is invited to view the exhibit.

A special reception to honor these artists and their photography will be
held at the Gallery on Friday, September 7th 5:00 - 7:00PM. The
reception is open to the public.

Jim Ryan is a freelance photographer and graduate of the University of
Tennessee who, for years, has spent his spare time on the trails of the
Smokies collecting images and video of their unspoiled beauty. Roger Lee
has photographed America's national parks extensively and has been honored
with multiple awards for his nature photography. Both photographers make
their home in East Tennessee and are committed to the enhancement and
continued preservation of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition by the Art Guild of Fairfield Glade featuring original oil, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, acrylic, pottery, photography, mixed media, sculpture, jewelry, and more by nearly 35 regional artists. The exhibition will be displayed at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from September 7-28, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on September 7 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

Founded in 1978 by twelve artists, the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is a volunteer not-for-profit organization formed to support and promote the arts. Membership is open to everyone interested in furthering art appreciation, personal growth in creative activities, and being part of a dynamic, growing organization. The Guild currently has about 130 members from the surrounding area.
