Calendar of Events

Students will create models of different types of rocks. Using various tools to observe the characteristics of the three major rock types, students will understand the process through which rocks are formed. Enrichment classes for talented and gifted students and designed for home-schooled children ages 7-14. Offering a hands-on learning experience in the area of science, this program consists of three courses that are four weeks in length. Instructor L’jon Papillon has 33 years of teaching experience with degrees in Gifted Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Early Childhood. Class fee is $60, and one student per paying adult will be able to take the class for $0.01.

October 2-28, Art Market Gallery of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by George Rothery and Kathy Lovelace, both of Knoxville.

Painter George Rothery will be exhibiting a collection of his recent works. A marine artist who concentrates in oils and acrylics, Rothery creates paintings inspired by the South Carolina coast and a nearly lifelong love of the water, sailing and racing. His work can be found in many public and private collections and has been exhibited nationally.

Artist Kathy Lovelace will exhibit a collection of small furniture and home accessory pieces which she has painted to create functional works of art. The Brook, Rainbow and Brown trout found in the streams of the Great Smoky Mountains are the subject matter for her works. Lovelace covers each painting with 10 layers of clear protective acrylic to make them completely functional and durable.

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for October 5th from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live music.

We have decided to work on a new approach to our readings of Shakespeare’s plays at the library downtown and we have a new format that I think will be a lot of fun.

We are going to read quarterly rather than monthly, and we are going to look for people to direct each reading. So we’ll ask that they do a cutting and at least some casting ahead of time which we will then fill out with people who come and want to read on the day of. Reading quarterly rather than monthly will mean that directors will have more time to prepare their scripts and put some actors together. So, if you have an interest please contact me so we can set it up.

Our next reading is planned for December and we are looking to do “Twelfth Night” which we know was performed as a Christmas piece by Shakespeare’s company and for which we have a good cut on hand.

Pencil Pushed: exploring process and boundaries in drawing.
In this exhibition, the word pencil functions simply as a metaphor or symbol for drawing and its activity. The artists selected are known for their drawing or drawing activity as their primary means of expression and have either pushed the material, process, or boundary of conventional drawing. Media included will be video, sculpture, animation, installation, and of course, works on paper. This exhibition is neither a survey nor the definitive grouping of mark-making artists. It is more a conversation about artists who have and continue to explore these regions in drawing. The diversity of the exhibition will favor mid-career artists, but will range from emerging to late.

The second floor Gallery at the U.S. Cellular Stage of the Bijou Theatre is
proud to present an exhibit of fine art photographs of the majestic vistas
and stunning wildlife of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The
exhibit includes prize-winning photos by local photographers Jim Ryan and
Roger Lee.

The purpose of the exhibit is to celebrate the preservation of the Smokies
by showcasing the beauty and wonder of this unique region. The gallery is
open to patrons who attend programs at the Bijou and, during regular
business hours, the general public is invited to view the exhibit.

A special reception to honor these artists and their photography will be
held at the Gallery on Friday, September 7th 5:00 - 7:00PM. The
reception is open to the public.

Jim Ryan is a freelance photographer and graduate of the University of
Tennessee who, for years, has spent his spare time on the trails of the
Smokies collecting images and video of their unspoiled beauty. Roger Lee
has photographed America's national parks extensively and has been honored
with multiple awards for his nature photography. Both photographers make
their home in East Tennessee and are committed to the enhancement and
continued preservation of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents two concurrent exhibitions August 24-November 4 Contemporary Focus 2012 and Fischli & Weiss: The Way Things Go.

Contemporary Focus is the KMA’s annual exhibition series that recognizes, supports, and documents the development of contemporary art in East Tennessee. Each year, the exhibition series features the work of artists who are living and making art in this region, and who are exploring issues relevant to the larger world of contemporary art.

The Way Things Go, a video installation by Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss, has earned a cult following since its premier at international art festivals in 1987. The Way Things Go documents a 30-minute chain reaction using ordinary objects, fire, fireworks, blasts of air, gravity, and a variety of corrosive liquids.

A free public opening for both exhibitions takes place Thursday, August 23 from 7-9pm. This event includes a cash bar and an opportunity to meet the Contemporary Focus artists. Additional programming for Contemporary Focus includes Dine & Discover presentations August 22, September 25, and October 24, all held at noon at the KMA.

The Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee, presents new art and new ideas, serves and educates diverse audiences, and enhances Knoxville’s quality of life.
