Tennessee Shines: Kevin Gordon + Kelley McRae

October 1: Kevin Gordon + Kelley McRae

Louisiana-born and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Kevin Gordon released Gloryland in February 2012, and within just a few weeks, his fifth disc had received rave reviews in Rolling Stone, USA Today and The New York Times. Gordon is a poet (the kind with a masters degree from the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop) and a bluesman whose plain, bayou-accented voice imparts stories of regular folks. Like the black band director and young white trumpet player who encounter the Klan in “Colfax,” the disc’s 10-minute stand-out track.

A quote from Kelley McRae’s press kit might be the best in any musician’s portfolio: “The last songs that made me cry were by a young New York singer, Kelley McRae.” That’s what filmmaker Wim Wenders wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle three years ago, and since then the singer-songwriter has uprooted from the city, traveled the country in a van and spent nine months in Knoxville recording her third album, “Brighter Than the Blues,” in a stone house McRae and her husband/guitarist Matt called “The Castle.” The disc showcases her richly angelic voice in songs reminiscent of Patty Griffin. Look for it at your neighborhood record store (and digital locales) on September 15.

Tennessee Shines happens every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Visitor Center and is broadcast live on award-winning, listener-supported radio station WDVX FM and WDVX.com.

Tickets are $10, available in advance at BrownPaperTickets.com. Remaining tickets are sold at the door on the night of the show, while supplies last. Doors of the visitor center open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins promptly at 7 p.m.

Children 14 and under accompanied by a parent are admitted free of charge.

Tennessee Stage Company: Shakespeare Outloud

5350.jpg

Category: Literature, spoken word, writing and Theatre

We have decided to work on a new approach to our readings of Shakespeare’s plays at the library downtown and we have a new format that I think will be a lot of fun.

We are going to read quarterly rather than monthly, and we are going to look for people to direct each reading. So we’ll ask that they do a cutting and at least some casting ahead of time which we will then fill out with people who come and want to read on the day of. Reading quarterly rather than monthly will mean that directors will have more time to prepare their scripts and put some actors together. So, if you have an interest please contact me so we can set it up.

Our next reading is planned for December and we are looking to do “Twelfth Night” which we know was performed as a Christmas piece by Shakespeare’s company and for which we have a good cut on hand.

If you are interested in Directing please get in touch.

Pellissippi State: Exhibition of African-American artist Harold Winslow

5260.jpg
  • September 19, 2012 — October 3, 2012

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and History, heritage

He lived on the roof of a five-story apartment building in Mexico, and his room was so small that it contained little more than a bed, some canvases and his painting tools. It was from there, though, that African-American artist Harold Winslow created more than 1,300 pieces, securing a place in art history as a prolific chronicler of Mexican culture.

A collection of 50 of Winslow’s works will be shown at a special traveling art exhibit hosted by Pellissippi State Community College and the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. The works have been on tour since August 2011 at selected Kentucky and Tennessee colleges and universities.

Slated for display at Pellissippi State Sept. 19-Oct. 3, “Una Visión de la Mexicanidad”—“Mexicanidad” refers to the Mexican national identity and culture—offers a record of one artist’s experience in two cultures. Winslow, who was born in 1918 in Dayton, Ohio, moved to Mexico in 1940 in the hopes of escaping racism. He remained there until his death in 2001, at the age of 83.

At the Bagwell Center Gallery. Hours: M-F 9-4. Hardin Valley Campus (10915 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville, TN 37933). Contact: 865-694-6400, www.pstcc.edu

University of Tennessee Ewing Gallery: Pencil Pushed

5318.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and Lecture, panel

Pencil Pushed: exploring process and boundaries in drawing.
In this exhibition, the word pencil functions simply as a metaphor or symbol for drawing and its activity. The artists selected are known for their drawing or drawing activity as their primary means of expression and have either pushed the material, process, or boundary of conventional drawing. Media included will be video, sculpture, animation, installation, and of course, works on paper. This exhibition is neither a survey nor the definitive grouping of mark-making artists. It is more a conversation about artists who have and continue to explore these regions in drawing. The diversity of the exhibition will favor mid-career artists, but will range from emerging to late.
