October 15: Eric Brace & Peter Cooper + Dale Ann Bradley & Steve Gulley

Journalists turned Grammy nominees? That’s right: East Nashville residents Eric Brace and Peter Cooper bonded over their shared histories as newspaper writers (Brace for the Washington Post and Cooper for The Tennessean), then started playing music together, blending master storytelling with musical craft. Together they’ve released the Grammy-nominated I Love: Tom T. Hall's Songs of Fox Hollow (2011), Master Sessions (2010) and You Don’t Have To Like Them Both (2009). Each player maintains his own musical career: Brace as the founder and lead singer of roots-rock band Last Train Home, and Cooper as the singer-songwriter behind Mission Door (2008) and The Lloyd Green Album (2010). Their live shows further highlight the duo’s charming repartee, bringing a living room vibe to any venue.

Dale Ann Bradley has set the bar for bluegrass and country vocals with her sweet, soulful and evocative Kentucky twang, which has only grown richer with the years. She spent most of the ‘90s with the New Coon Creek Girls, a band started by legendary harmonica player and music promoter John Lair, who founded Kentucky’s long-running radio show and concert hall, the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. Over her career, the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) has named Bradley Female Vocalist of the Year four times. Her latest CD, 2011’s Somewhere South of Crazy, features the song "Come Home Good Boy" written by East Tennessee’s own Sarah Pirkle.

Performing with Bradley is singer and guitarist Steve Gulley, who performed with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver early in his career and founded and fronted popular bluegrass bands Mountain Heart and Grasstowne, which he left in late 2011 to devote more time to play in Bradley’s band.

Tennessee Shines happens every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Visitor Center, 301 South Gay Street, and is broadcast live on award-winning, listener-supported radio station WDVX FM and WDVX.com.

Tickets are $10, available in advance at BrownPaperTickets.com. Remaining tickets are sold at the door on the night of the show, while supplies last. Doors of the visitor center open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins promptly at 7 p.m.

The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville are pleased to present “Arts in the Airport: 75 Years of Making Memories in Aviation,” a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from nearly 40 artists in the East Tennessee region. “Arts in the Airport” was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The selected art features contemporary 2- and 3-dimensional artwork and will be exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint from October 12, 2012 – April 11, 2013 with an opening reception on Wednesday, November 7, at 5:00 PM.

The Arts & Culture Alliance, with assistance from Dorothy Habel, juried the exhibition with final approval by the Airport Authority. A traveling exhibition of the atomic art of Doug Waterfield with paintings of an exploration of atomic testing phenomena and subsequent 1950's atomic culture.
An exploration of atomic testing phenomena and subsequent 1950's atomic culture is captured in "DOOMTOWN," the original paintings of atomic art by Doug Waterfield in his exhibition opening October 12 at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge.

When the Atomic Energy Commission, predecessor to the Department of Energy, began 1950's testing of atomic bombs in the Nevada Test Site, the creation of several "Survival Towns" also known as "Doomtowns" were part of the test. These replica towns were built to see what the effects of the detonation of atomic weapons would have on Anytown, USA. The houses were furnished and peopled with mannequins. The photos and film footage that survives from these tests was quite influential on Waterfield's painting series, entitled "Doomtown." It is a commentary on a bygone age of American history, and is an effort to bring awareness to the past known as the Atomic Age - an age of optimism, technological advances and unmitigated paranoia.

Doug Waterfield is an Arkansas native currently residing in Nebraska with his family. He is an associate professor art at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. His work has been shown nationally for the past 25 years.

Just as a colorful outdoor environment is the hallmark of the fall season, the colorful Fall Awards Show is a seasonal hallmark at the Plateau Creative Arts Center (PCAC). At the Fall Awards Show, both residents and visitors will enjoy viewing some of the finest artwork that the members of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade have to offer.

To celebrate the Fall Awards Show, the public is invited to the opening reception held at the PCAC on Friday, October 12, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

haunted? It goes backwards, of course.)
It wouldn’t be Halloween without the trick-or-treating! One of the highlights of
BOO! at the Zoo is the BOO! Trail, where little trick-or-treaters can fill their bag
with goodies as they make their way through the zoo. Each night of BOO! at the

Using sterling silver and beautifully cut gemstones, California designer Philippa Roberts creates contemporary necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings that can be worn formally or informally, with an appeal to all ages.

October 5-13 - Fall Fibers from Baabaazuzu
Baabaazuzu creates environmentally-friendly clothing and accessories for men and women. Every piece is repurposed and handmade from felted wool. Items include mittens, fingerless gloves, scarves, hats, purses, bags, and fashion accessories.

October 12-27 - Jennythreads by Jen Swearington
Each piece of fabric in every Jennythreads item is hand dyed and/or hand printed by the artist with imagery from her sketchbook pages and original hand-cut stencils. Jennythreads handmade silk and bamboo apparel and accessories have been featured in the New York Times, Belle Armoire, Niche, on HGTV, and have won many awards at fine art and craft events.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its Fall Porch Sale starting Thursday, Oct. 11, and running for about two weeks. The Porch Sale, held each Spring and Fall, features outdated stock, seconds, student crafts and unjuried work by members of the Craft Center. It’s an excellent place to get great deals on handmade crafts. This year we’ll also have handmade artisan bread for sale while it lasts.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for 40 years. The center is located at 2716 Andersonville Highway 61 in Norris, Tenn., one mile east of I-75 north at Exit 122. Currently the center has about 70 crafters who sell in the shop.

The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art presents the fourteenth annual Artscapes auction in two parts: a Cocktail Party and Silent Auction, Thursday, October 11, 6-9 p.m., and a Gala and Live Auction, Friday, October 19, 6:30 p.m.

Auction items encompass a variety of regionally and nationally exhibited works by artists well known to the Knoxville community from past museum exhibitions along with a few surprises in paintings, drawings, prints, glass, jewelry and fine crafts. Additionally, a curator-led tour of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in Bentonville, Arkansas is up for the bidding. An exhibit of the auction items opens October 4 at the KMA. Until then, a selection of pieces may be seen at the Emporium on Gay Street. Art may also be viewed at the KMA website, www.knoxart.org or by e-mail request to kma.artscapes@gmail.com.

Highlights of the works to be auctioned include an oil painting by contemporary colorist Joel Barr and a signature oil on canvas by American Impressionist and outdoorsman John Adams Spelman (1880-1941), who traveled to East Tennessee in the 1920s and 1930s to paint our beautiful Smoky Mountains and surrounding lakes.

Wildlife Program: Behind the Scenes with the Ijams Veterinarian

(ages 5 and up) Get up close and personal with some of Ijams' furred and feathered animal ambassadors! You won't want to miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of our animal care program. You'll get to see how we fee and care for the animals, and you may even have the chance to get nose-to-beak or toe-to-tail with some of our wildlife friends. Due to liability concerns, participants cannot be under 5 years of age. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
