Marble Springs: Astronomy workshop

Marble Springs State Historic Site is proud to present the latest in a series of Stargazing workshops on Saturday, September 14th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. This workshop will be instructed by Mr. Garry Noland. Mr. Noland has been an adjunct instructor of Astronomy at the University of Tennessee for 11 years.
The lecture topic will be Cosmic Collisions. The lecture portion will take place before the stargazing.
This workshop is free & open to the public. Donations will be accepted & are appreciated.
All activities take place at the Marble Springs State Historic Site: 1220 West Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.

*All participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight. In the event of inclement weather or overcast skies the lecture part of the program will still take place.

Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum: Create: A Leaf Print Birdbath

Spend a Saturday morning at the gardens with Knoxville Botanical Garden Grounds Manager, Mathew McMillan, creating your own garden art. With the sand-casting technique you will be learning in this workshop, you can sculpt simple to elaborate decorative and functional birdbaths and art to fill your gardens. The workshop will cover materials, sculpting skills, and various finishes. All materials will be provided. Things may get messy so wear your grubbies.

Note: It's best to leave your work at the Garden to cure over the weekend.

Preregistration is required. Meet at our Visitor Center. $30 members, $40 non-members.

Second Saturday Concert at the Cove

The Roane Writers Group: 2013 Student Writers Scholarship Gala

The Roane Writers Group announced that its 2013 Student Writers Scholarship Gala will be held at the historic Roane County Courthouse in Kingston on September 14¸ from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The event is the Group's primary fundraising activity for the scholarships and cash prizes awarded to winners of its annual Student Writing Contest.

This year's Gala, titled "Sentenced to Write," marks the first time the antebellum Courthouse, maintained by the Roane Heritage Commission, has been offered as a venue for such an event. Gala guests will be welcomed by antebellum costumed greeters and enjoy an array of entertainment that will include storytelling and tall tales from local celebrities, including Bill Landry, Elizabeth Rose, and Judy Lockhart DeGregorio. Singer/songwriter Jeff Nelson will provide music within the courthouse, and The Sunshine Station Band will perform in the gazebo on the beautiful Courthouse grounds. The Gala will also feature an art exhibition sponsored by the Arts Council of Roane County, a wine and cheese bar, and fire-seared Asian cuisine cooked to order by WokChow.

Attendance at the Gala is by invitation only and requires a minimum donation of $35.00 per person. In addition to monetary donations, the Writers Group seeks the donation of goods and services for the fundraising auction scheduled to take place at the Gala. Members of the public are encouraged to request an invitation and offer donations by emailing bjgillum@comcast.net.

Knox County Public Library and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County: Kids Jamboree & Strollerthon

Knox County Public Library and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County invite the public to celebrate early literacy at the Kids Jamboree & Strollerthon on Saturday, September 14 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at West Town Mall. The event is being held to celebrate the 1.5 million books mailed to the children of Knox County since 2005. The Kids Jamboree & Strollerthon will feature a live broadcast of WDVX's Kids Stuff with Sean McCollough, celebrity story times, cake, crafts, and prizes for the entire family!

Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett will deliver the 1.5 millionth book at the event and will present a joint proclamation declaring the third week in September Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Week in Knox County and the city of Knoxville.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Kids Jamboree & Strollerthon will kick-off with a 2-mile fun walk around West Town Mall with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Strollers will start strolling at 9 a.m. Prizes will be given for Best Decorated Stroller, Best Storybook Character Costume, and drawings for gift cards for all race finishers will be given throughout the day. A $12 registration fee for the Strollerthon will cover the cost of books and mailing for one child in Knox County for an entire year. Set in 1930's. When Elyot and Amanda, a formerly married couple, meet by chance while honeymooning with new spouses at the same hotel, old sparks reignite and the two impulsively elope. But, after only a few days of being reunited, their alternating passions of love and anger remind them of why they divorced in the first place. Matters only escalate when their aggrieved recent spouses arrive and new partnerships are formed.
