Bijou Theatre: Scott Miller & The Commonwealth and Paul Thorn Band
Category: Music
No stranger to Knoxville, Scott Miller became a Friday night staple at the now-defunct Hawkeye’s bar for four years and amassed a strong fan base for his feisty, funny persona and his guitar slingin’ homespun appeal. Paul Thorn’s muscular brand of roots music -- bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern -- speaks universal truths, and he mines "saint and sinner scenarios" into his definitive rock n’ roll, Americana sound. Thorn and Miller, veteran roots-rock musicians, join together on the U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre.

Athens Area Council for the Arts: The Hit Men: Featuring Former Stars of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
Category: Music
The Athens Area Council for the Arts' 34th Big Time/Small Town Season of Performances features world famous performers and some from our own (regional) backyard. All four shows will be held at Athens City Middle School, 200 Keith Lane, Athens, Tennessee at 7:30 PM.
The season begins on Friday, October 4 with The Hit Men - featuring Former Stars of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Former members of mega-star acts have worked with everyone from Frankie Vallie to Carly Simon to Elton John. You’ll know every word of every song as The Hit Men take you on an amazing look back through rock and roll history singing songs you’ve loved for ages. Plus, they’ll tell you all about what it was like being on the road and touring with legendary rock stars.
Next is a holiday concert by the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra on Tuesday, December 10th. Maestro James Fellenbaum will conduct the orchestra as they perform seasonal favorites and masterworks. Three of Athens’ favorite singers – Mike Simmons, Rusty Patterson, and Tim Frazier – known as Our Three Tenors, return as special guests.
In honor of Black History Month, the Fisk University Jubilee SingersTM bring the a cappella spiritual to Athens on Monday, February 3rd. The ensemble, which is comprised entirely of current students at Fisk University, broke racial barriers in the US and abroad when it introduced “slave songs†to the world in 1871. Nearly 150 years later, the singers are preserving the rich, distinctly American music known now as the Negro spiritual.
For the final offering in the season Dan Akroyd, Judy Belushi, and musical director Paul Shaffer present the one and only Official Blues Brothers Revue on Wednesday, March 12. It’s the closest show to the real thing as possible – Wayne Catania and Keiron Lafferty as Jake and Elwood Blues lead the high-energy intercontinental Rhythm & Blues Revue Band in a performance that pays homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, soul music, and gospel in the true spirit of the original Blues BrothersTM.

The Arts at Pellissippi State: Pacific Rim Street Fest: A Celebration of Asian Pacific Rim Heritage
Category: Dance, movement, Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events, Free event and Music
Pellissippi State Community College hopes a look at new cultures will prompt the community to look at the world from a new perspective. The free event takes place in the Goins Building College Center on the Hardin Valley Campus. “Each semester, we have events that focus on different cultural experiences,” said Gayle Wood, the college’s director of Access and Diversity. “We’ve spotlighted cultures as diverse as Mediterranean, Hispanic, African and Native American in the past. We hope each event encourages our students, faculty, and staff members and the community at large to look at the world from a new cultural perspective. The idea to focus on Pacific Rim countries—including China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea and Taiwan—came from a student who also is a military veteran. He had amazing stories about serving in some of those Pacific Rim countries and the cultural experiences he had there.”
Pacific Rim Street Fest is one of the events that make up this academic year’s The Arts at Pellissippi State. The arts series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures, and the fine arts. Pacific Rim Street Fest features Wah Lum Kung Fu of Knoxville performing a traditional lion dance, a Japanese dancing troupe from Atlanta and a Japanese tea ceremony. Other tentative activities include a Chinese fine artist and personal booths set up by Pellissippi State students native to Pacific Rim countries. The Access and Diversity Office will give away chopsticks, Chinese and Japanese folding fans, and fortune cookies. Asian teas will be served as well. The Pacific Rim Street Fest also allows attendees to sample traditional foods, including Taiwanese Kong Bao chicken, Japanese wasabi pork shumai and Vietnamese dau phong, or boiled peanuts.

Clarence Brown Theatre: Our Country's Good
Category: Theatre
by Timberlake Wertenbaker, directed by Calvin MacLean
At the Carousel Theater
In January 1788, the first of the British prison ships arrive at Botany Bay, Australia and settle the penal colony at Port Jackson, the site of current-day Sydney. Many of the prisoners have committed minor crimes and their wardens are military men who fought and lost the war against the American colonies. When hope and supplies run low, a lieutenant tries to increase morale by staging a comedy using the convicts as the cast. Based on real events, this award-winning drama is an evocative look at a moment in history--the founding of a nation--and an inspiring tale about the transforming power of theatre. This production is directed by Calvin MacLean and is recommended for high school and up. It contains strong language and brief nudity.
Please join us following the production of Our Country's Good for a staged reading of George Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer, the comedy actually performed by those first fleeters, immediately following the Friday, October 11 performance. Mix and mingle with the cast of Our Country's Good while enjoying light refreshments between performances.
Please join us for an informative "talk back" about Our Country's Good with Director Calvin MacLean and the cast. Dramaturg
Misty G. Anderson also will be on-hand to discuss George Farquhar's comedy The Recruiting Officer. Discussions generally begin 15 minutes following the matinee and last about 45 minutes.
