Knoxville Opera will open its 36th Season with a stunning production of Offenbach’s popular The Tales of Hoffmann. The production stars Talise Trevigne, performing all four soprano roles, a rare feat tackled by very few artists in history. The intriguing production is a thrilling Halloween appetizer regarding the poet Hoffmann, who, in his world of fantasy and demons, pursues four mesmerizing women: a life-sized mechanical doll, an aspiring chanteuse, a Venetian courtesan, and an opera diva; only to be thwarted at every turn by four diabolical villains. Knoxville Opera welcomes internationally renowned tenor Evan Bowers as Hoffmann, and baritone Markus Beam as the devils, each in his company debut. Highlights include: the Barcarolle, the Diamond Aria, Olympia’s Doll Song. Performed in French with projected English translations.

We'll have a great spread to dine from, including fingers...sorry, finger foods, and a selection of adult and children's beverages, such as white and red blood for you Vampires, a variety of Witch's brew, and carbonated concoctions from Dr. Frankenstein's lab.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris is looking for new members to sell their handmade crafts in the Craft Center shop. Anyone interested in going through the jurying process should pick up a jurying packet at the center and then bring three samples of their work to the center between Monday, October 21 and Friday, November 1 at noon. The jurying will take place on Monday, November 4, and items must be picked up by Thursday, November 12. Each person going through the process must fill out a form and pay a nonrefundable $25 jurying fee. The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for over 40 years. Come and join the spirits for a tour of Downtown Knoxville’s scariest landmarks. The tours which last approximately one and a half hours each, will visit the sites of some of Knoxville’s best kept secrets. Stories for this year include: the legend of Knoxville’s own Frankenstein, The Haunted Church Organ & Hanging Abner Baker. All tours began and end at James White’s Fort located at the intersection of Hill Avenue and Hall of Fame Drive. Ample free parking is available for tour participants at the Fort. Tours will depart at 7:00 p.m. each evening. Each tour will end with a marshmallow roast around the fires at the Fort.

A Provocative and Gripping Story
The WordPlayers will present the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play Doubt, A Parable by John Patrick Shanley. This brilliant and powerful drama features Carol Mayo Jenkins, veteran of Broadway, Off-Broadway, numerous regional theatres and star of TV’s Fame. Ms. Jenkins plays Sister Aloysius, a Catholic school principal, who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn (Rollin Prince) of improper relations with one of the male students. Lar’Juanette Williams plays Mrs. Muller and Rachel Norman enacts Sister James. This thought-provoking drama confronts issues of hierarchical power, uncertainties and doubt. Recommended for ages 15+ Optional Post-show Discussion will follow each performance.

Led by Ijams' naturalists and historians, this unique walking tour along rugged trails takes in Ijams' disused quarries with their own dark pasts for an informative yet hauntingly fun adventure in search of the infamous, the unknown, and the unexplained. $10 per person.

The District Gallery is pleased to present a photographic journey through Paris as seen through the lens of photographer Ben Finch. PARIS: A Journey on Film features classic scenes of Paris and modern views of iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Finch also captures common details of everyday French culture and turns them into memorable images with his timeless aesthetic and traditional film photography.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 11 from 5:30-9 p.m. with pastries by the French Market. The show continues through November 9.

A jewelry show by Adel Chefridi will also open on October 11. Chefridi’s designs emphasize simplicity, wearability, durability, and openness to light and movement. Made with natural gemstones, his elegant pieces have a friendly and peaceful feel that make them wearable every day.

The public is invited to the reception and opening of the Annual Fall Awards Art Show on October 11 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Plateau Arts Center (PCAC). The theme of the show is Wild about Art. Artists of the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade will submit their original work to be judged on this theme in the following categories: Watercolor and acrylic under glass, Oil and acrylic not under glass, Mixed media, Pastel, Colored pencil drawing, Black and white drawing, Photography, Three dimensional, and Jewelry. Awards will be given for each category. This year's judge is Bobbie Crews of Knoxville. The reception will include refreshments viewing of the new show, and presentation of awards.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its Fall Porch Sale starting Thursday, Oct. 10, and running for about two weeks. The Porch Sale, held each Spring and Fall, features outdated stock, seconds, student crafts and unjuried work by members of the Craft Center. It’s an excellent time to get great deals. This year we’ll also have handmade baked goods for sale while they last.

Flying Anvil Theatre and Knox County Public Library to Offer
Free Play Writing Workshop.
Everyone's got a story, but they don't always have the best tools to tell it. Flying Anvil Theatre, in partnership with Knox County Public Library, is pleased to announce Grand Entrances: Writing for the Stage, an 8 week play writing workshop that gives potential playwrights the basic elements of play writing as well as a "behind the scenes" look at play production.

The workshop runs on Wed, October 9 through November 27 from 2-4 p.m. at Lawson McGhee Library in downtown Knoxville. The workshop is free and open to all adults. No formal writing experience is necessary. Participants may sign up online at www.knoxlib.org or by calling (865) 215-8729.
