Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge: Celebration of the Young Child

  • April 17, 2015
  • 9 AM - 1 PM

Category: Festivals, special events and Kids, family

Ron Anglin delights young and old with his juggling and comedy program, “Quite a Catch.” He will present his juggling feats for the Celebration of the Young Child at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. His show will be at 10 a.m., and the celebration will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Before and after the show, children may create “make and take” crafts with the Florence Crittenton Agency, be “Kids in Motion” with the National Fitness Center, learn about fire safety from the Oak Ridge Fire Department, experience healthy living with a “Balance and Nutrition” program by the Anderson County Health Department, and taste healthy snacks presented Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Garden activities, healthy snacks and playful exercise will introduce the museum’s new Healthy Living Initiative during the Celebration of the Young Child. The initiative, which will feature new classes, camps, programs and an exhibit, is made possible by a grant the Children’s Museum received last fall from the Institute for Museum and Library Services. Storyteller Adele Roberts will lead storytelling and puppet fun. Roberts has written a series of children’s books, starting with The Adventures of Sammy the Skunk. Her stories focus on teaching character values based on circumstances in which the animals find themselves. Puppets will be part of the Pilot Club of Oak Ridge presentation of BrainMinders, a children’s safety program featuring puppets presenting stories about safety issues. The World of Trains, the Puppet Room, TVA Waterworks, Rainforest, Dollhouse and other exhibits will be open. Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee and Healthy Families/Nurturing Parents programs will invite the museum’s young gardeners to “plant” a garden of pinwheels for prevention, a symbol of child abuse prevention, in the Environmental Learning Center and Gardens. “Make and take” crafts will include a finger paint mermaid, construction paper flowers, and glittery paper plate ladybugs.

Juggler and comedian Anglin is a former Army helicopter pilot who taught high school for nine years before taking his juggling act all over the country. He juggles balls and clubs, spins plates, stacks dice and performs soap bubble tricks, among other feats. His shows teach science, geography and character traits. From Molena, Ga., he was a performing artist for young audiences at Woodruff Arts Center for 12 years. He teaches circus arts for Cirque du Soleil’s outreach program, Cirque du Monde.

Admission is $6 per person, and scholarships are available upon request. 461 West Outer Dr., Oak Ridge. Information: (865) 482-1074, www.childrensmuseumofoakridge.org

Celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season!

Book and Lyrics by Bertolt Brecht; Music by Kurt Weill; Directed by Calvin MacLean
Clarence Brown Theatre

“The greatest musical of all time.” Newsweek

With a haunting jazz score and biting lyrics, the “haves” clash with the “have-nots” in Brecht’s sharp critique of Capitalism.

This brilliant masterpiece of epic theatre originated the popular songs “The Ballad of Mack the Knife,” “Solomon Song,” and “Pirate Jenny.”

To enhance the audience experience, the CBT will continue, and in some cases expand, several popular programs in 2014-2015. Open captioned productions also will continue in the new season, taking place on the first Sunday matinee of each show. Talk backs, which are informative discussions with the director and cast, will continue to take place following the second Sunday matinee of each show.

  • 6:00-7:30PM

Many people consider Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy to be one of the world's greatest novels. Published in 1877 against the backdrop of Russian high society and its frequent hypocrisy, Tolstoy explores themes of love, selfishness, family, and how to lead the best possible life.

Often masterpieces such as Anna Karenina can be intimidating. Knox County Public Library is pleased to partner with the University of Tennessee's Department of Modern Languages to present Tuesdays with Tolstoy throughout April to encourage readers to try Tolstoy's classic story of passion. Everyone is invited to read along and join the discussion.

UTK Russian literature student, Erika Knowles, under the guidance of her major professor, Dr. Stephen Blackwell, will facilitate a four-part study of Anna Karenina at Lawson McGhee Library from 6:00-7:30 p.m. starting on Tuesday, April 7 and continuing on April 14, 21, and 28. Each week, participants will read a section of the book, which they will discuss at the Library. Registration is encouraged at http://www.knoxlib.org/Tolstoy.

Tuesdays with Tolstoy is held in conjunction with the UTK's Leo Tolstoy Festival, which takes place April 23-25 . More information is available at http://mfll.utk.edu/tolstoy/. Dr. Blackwell began the Leo Tolstoy Festival as part of a bigger series called the Great Author Festival.
