Nief-Norf: 4th Annual "Unsilent Night: Knoxville"

Category: Festivals, special events, Free event, Kids, family and Music

At the Knoxville Sunsphere - We invite you to join us for Boombox Christmas Caroling with Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night!

If you wish to join us this year, PLEASE REGISTER at http://www.niefnorf.org/2015-2016-season/2015/10/30/unsilent-night-knoxville, where you can tell us if you need a tape, CD, or will bring your own iDevice. This is so we know how many of each to bring! We will provide you with a copy of the audio tracks on the media of your choice once you get in touch with us.

Unsilent Night is an original composition by Phil Kline, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer. Each participant gets one of four tracks of music in the form of a cassette, CD, or Mp3. Together all four tracks comprise Unsilent Night. The fact that the participants play different "parts" simultaneously helps create the special sound of the piece. Participants carry boomboxes, or anything that amplifies music, and simultaneously start playing the music. They then walk a carefully chosen route through their city’s streets, creating a unique mobile sound sculpture which is different from every listener's perspective.

It all started in winter 1992, when Phil had an idea for a public artwork in the form of a holiday caroling party. He composed a multi-track electronic piece that was 45 minutes long (the length of one side of a cassette tape), invited a few dozen friends who gathered in Greenwich Village, gave each person a boombox with one of four tapes in it, and instructed everyone to hit PLAY at the same time. What followed was a sound unlike anything they had ever heard before: an evanescence filling the air, reverberating off the buildings and city streets as the crowd walked a pre-determined route. Phil says: “In effect, we became a city-block-long stereo system.”

The piece was so popular that it became an annual tradition, and then an international phenomenon, spreading across the USA and to other countries worldwide. Since 1992, it has been presented in over 50 cities and four continents, drawing crowds of up to 1,500 participants in cities like New York and San Francisco. Flavorpill describes the New York event as: "An annual seasonal favorite, Unsilent Night is an open procession for an unlimited number of boomboxes that starts under the arch of Washington Square Park. Musically, it begins with delicate strains of Phil Kline's composition rising as marchers turn their boomboxes up to 10 and wind their way through the streets of the East Village, enveloped in the bubble of Kline's glorious ambient score. Unsilent Night’s pageant ends under the giant elm in Tompkins Square as the final notes once again reach up to the heavens, offering thanks for the past 45 minutes of joy and redemption."

WUTK's "Exam Jam XI" Benefit Concert

  • December 4, 2015
  • 8 PM

Category: Fundraisers and Music

The Music Department of Volunteer Radio WUTK 90.3 The Rock is proud to announce the station’s seasonal fundraiser, Exam Jam XI, happening Friday, December 4 at The Concourse at the International beginning at 8 p.m. All proceeds from this fundraiser concert will go directly to the non-profit WUTK Gift Fund, helping to keep the self-supporting broadcast lab and station on the air. WUTK is an award winning college radio station and student instructional lab that receives no day-to-day operations funding from UT’s Department of Journalism and Electronic Media, making donations and fundraisers a key means of generating much-needed revenue to keep the station on air. WUTK has gained local and national acclaim for the variety of programming it has provided Knoxville since 1982. WUTK 90.3 The Rock was recently voted “Knoxville’s Best Radio Station” in the inaugural Knoxville Mercury “Top Knox” readers’ poll. This is the tenth straight year that WUTK has received such an award. As a student instructional lab it allows students the chance to experience what it is like to work for a professional radio station. The station provides many educational and professional opportunities available nowhere else on campus, such as the chance to be an on-air deejay, with positions made available to University of Tennessee students seeking class credit as well as volunteers with a passion for music. Organizing this event has been a semester long undertaking for the members of WUTK’s Music Department. In addition to organizing the event, the students have solicited donations from local businesses for raffle prizes for this event. Student members of WUTK’s Music Department reached out to a variety of local bands in order to ensure a diversity of entertainment for the evening. Since the event is an effort by students, for students, WUTK hopes to see a great showing of support from university students. Entertainment will be provided by local Americana rockers Handsome & The Humbles, the very hot 3-piece pop-punk band Hellaphant, genre flipping giants Senryu, and the electro-indie rock sounds of The Enigmatic Foe. The variety of music scheduled for the night reflects the diverse local scene, as well as the broad scope of music heard on WUTK, who has been promoting, supporting, and playing local musicians since the early 1980’s.

At The Concourse at The International, 940 Blackstock Ave., Knoxville, TN. $5 minimum donation at the door the night of the show. More info is at www.wutkradio.com or call 865-974-2229.

Foothills Community Players: A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody

  • December 3, 2015 — December 6, 2015

Category: Theatre

A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody by Ron Bernas is a spoof of and love letter to the screwball comedies of the 1930s and to stage mysteries in general. As the show opens, the Perrys make their traditional New Years resolutions together: Matthew declares to Julia that he wants something more . . . to be able to travel abroad, to play golf every day, to spend more time at his club. Thus, he resolves to kill her by next New Years Eve so he will be free to pursue his heart’s desires. Julia takes his resolution in stride and resolves to still be alive a year later. Their games begin and they let no one stand in their ways as they attempt to keep their resolutions as the year goes by. To liven things up, we add the Perry’s spoiled, dingy daughter Bunny, her bright and forgiving boyfriend Donald, Buttram, the Perry’s longtime butler who harbors a dreadful secret, and Plotnik, a bumbling police detective who tries to figure out “who-done-it” --- that is if something really has been done. Who will succeed in his or her resolution --- and who gets caught in the crossfire? This hilarious comedy has lots of surprises, right up to the end.
