Tiger Lily Theatre: Henrik Ibsen’s "A Doll's House"

  • December 11, 2015 — December 13, 2015

Category: Theatre

Tiger Lily Theatre Company is pleased to present Henrik Ibsen’s timeless play “A Doll’s House.” Reimagined against a post-depression American backdrop, this this production of Ibsen’s most famous play highlights the timelessness of Nora’s struggle against the confines of societal norms and a marriage that is not what it seems. Nora and Torvald Helmer believe they are happily married and on the brink of a blissful new phase of life: Torvald has been promoted to bank manager and their money worries are over. But Nora has a secret debt, incurred with good intentions and a forged signature, and with her husband's new power comes the threat of blackmail.

Featuring a cast of local actors, this production will take place at Broadway Academy of Performing Arts, 706 N. Broadway St, for one weekend only. Parking is available at the rear of Broadway Academy on Lamar St.

Tiger Lily Theatre is dedicated to furthering opportunities for women in the Knoxville arts community. Through the performance of both classical and contemporary works, we provide performance, directing, writing and design opportunities while bringing impassioned and engaging theatre to our audience. Knoxville’s first women’s theatre, Tiger Lily Theatre was recently selected to represent the state of Tennessee in the 2016 Southeastern Theatre Conference Community Theatre Festival Competition. Tiger Lily currently produces two performances per season, including the series of short, original works in the spring. We consider it our duty to provide a consistent venue for emerging playwrights, particularly those in the Knoxville area. We are always accepting submissions for our short play production via email at tigerlilytheatre@yahoo.com.

Fluorescent Gallery: Circus Orbis by Beauvais Lyons

  • December 11, 2015
  • 6-9 PM

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

One Night Only: Circus Orbis (a work in progress by Beauvais Lyons)
At Fluorescent Gallery, 627 North Central St., Knoxville, TN 37917

Beauvais Lyons, Chancellor’s Professor of Art and Director of the Hokes Archives at UT Knoxville has begun the process of fabricating and documenting Circus Orbis, an imaginary, early 20th century American circus. Lyons initiated this project seven months ago through the support of a UT Affiliated Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome and a Faculty Development Leave this semester. This showing will include preparatory drawings for a series of color lithographs, recent prints and a set of four large banner paintings. Source materials for the project will also be on view.

Conceived as a long-term work of parafiction, Circus Orbis will require as many as ten years to complete, and is intended to include props, costumes, a model of the “Splendarium Show Palace,” photographs, printed ephemera, and even circus music. The theme of the circus bridges fact and fiction, as it tests our understanding of the impossible and the plausible, fantasy and reality. The circus is a rich topic as it encompasses subjects including zoology (with the menagerie), anthropology (with its representations of “other” cultures), and even the concept of the museum (with the sideshow display).

Museum of Appalachia: Christmas in Old Appalachia

10402.jpg
  • December 5, 2015 — December 24, 2015

Category: Festivals, special events and History, heritage

Popcorn balls and paper chains… fruits and nuts in their stockings … carols by the fire... a cedar tree cut in the nearby woods- that’s the Christmas most rural Appalachian children knew. And it's the Christmas we recreate each year throughout the Museum village at our special.... Join us as we recreate a meaningful holiday of simpler times. Traditional trees and hand-made decorations, typical of austere pioneer days, transform the Museum’s authentic log buildings.

Wander through the village and marvel at the simple treasures of their settlement days. In the one-room, dirt-floored “Dan'l Boone” cabin, strings of popcorn and cotton bolls circle a dormant tree; Paper chains and other ornaments trim the tree in the Little Tater Valley Schoolhouse. Sweet gum and sycamore balls are strung throughout the Mark Twain Family Cabin, and a traditional silver star tops a native red cedar Christmas tree in the turn-of-the-century Peters Homestead House. Apples, nuts, homemade toys, and oranges fill stockings hung in the cabins. Pick up some stocking stuffers in the Museum Gift and Antique Shop, which features everything from hand-crafted ornaments, locally made muscadine and moonshine jellies, and beautiful pottery, along with baskets, quilts, and plenty of Appalachian specialties. Or just come and enjoy a homemade southern country lunch in front of the warm fireplace. You'll want to make Christmas in Old Appalachia part of your family's annual holiday tradition!

Museum of Appalachia, 2819 Andersonville Hwy., Clinton, TN 37716 (16 miles north of Knoxville at I-75, exit 122, then one mile east). Open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Information: 865-494-7680, www.museumofappalachia.org
