Part of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-2017 Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series, which marks the KSO’s 81st season.

The KSO's October Masterworks performances feature Vivaldi's famous Four Seasons, with violinist Giora Schmidt as soloist.

Violinist Giora Schmidt has appeared with many prominent symphony orchestras around the globe including Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, National Arts Centre, Toronto, Vancouver and the Israel Philharmonic. Committed to education and sharing his passion for music, Giora regularly seeks out new ways of reaching young violinists and music lovers around the world through technology and social media. Giora was the First Prize winner of the Philadelphia Orchestra's Greenfield Competition in 2000, the recipient of a 2003 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and in 2005 won the Classical Recording Foundation's Samuel Sanders Award. From 2004-2006 he was chosen to be a Starling Fellow where he taught as Itzhak Perlman’s assistant at The Juilliard School.

Marble City Opera will present two American comic operas; La Divina by Thomas Pasatieri, and Gallantry, a soap-opera, opera by Douglas Moore. Performances will be presented at 8:00 pm. Marble City Opera is excited to welcome Scruffy City Orchestra’s conductor, Ace Edeward back to the Marble City Opera stage. Marble City Opera just celebrated their third birthday and is excited to continue to bring accessible opera performances to new venues, and audiences in Knoxville.

Gallantry by Douglass Moore is a parody of a soap-opera. Complete with doctors, a love triangle, suspense, and sung commercial interruptions. Directed by Kathryn Frady. La Divina by Thomas Pasatieri is about the farewell performance of a stellar but aging diva, whose assistant and manager are not displeased to see an end to the confusion constantly created by the prima donna’s temperament and “star complex.” It’s funny and heartfelt. Co-Directed by James Marvel and Kathryn Frady.

Ashley Lyon uses clay and photography to create a dialectical relationship among space, viewer, image and form. She meticulously builds all the components of her work, addressing many levels of realism in attempt to transcend traditional figuration.

Lyon received a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Washington in Seattle and MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been awarded residencies at the Bemis Foundation, Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts, Anderson Ranch Arts Center and the European Ceramic WorkCentre. She received an Elizabeth Greensheild Grant in 2011 and was a Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramics at Alfred University. She is co-director of the Belfry, an artist-run exhibition venue in Hornell, NY.

In collaboration with the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, October’s exhibition will be a presentation of video projects by Liam Young. Liam will be lecturing Monday, October 10, at 5:30PM in room 109, McCarty Auditorium of the Art and Architecture Building.

Liam Young is a speculative architect who, in his own words, “operates in the spaces between design, fiction and futures”. With his London-based design think tank, Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today, he explores the future implications of emerging urban developments. Named by Blueprint magazine as one of 25 people who will change architecture and design, Young uses fiction and film to discuss probable futures.

The District Gallery is pleased to present Mask by sculptor Nan Jacobsohn. In her second showing at the gallery, Jacobsohn evokes the primal in her latest collection of striking animal masks. Exploring sculpture in its most original form, Jacobsohn’s work gives way to endless possibilities, both tactile and sacred, ancient yet contemporary. The use of masks for ritual and ceremonial purposes has been a human practice since antiquity, intimately linked with animal iconography. From the ancient cave paintings in France to the monumental totem images of the Northwest, artists have attributed to their fellow creatures powers and qualities both natural and magical. “I consider them, perhaps, guardian spirits,” Jacobsohn says. Working in ceramic and mixed media, Jacobsohn expresses the distinctive features of each creature with textural and stylistic elements, and captures the essence of their spirit. “I love the fact that you connect directly with the clay with your hands, and it responds almost like a living thing,” says Jacobsohn. With their primal power incarnated in clay, her masks are brought alive.
