The Glowing Body: Mystical Kirtan

  • December 10, 2016
  • 6:00-8:30PM

Category: Music

Saturday, December 10th, 6:00-8:30, performance begins at 6:30pm.

Join Miribai Moon with Special Guests Kalidas & Amah Devi for an unforgettable evening of Mystical Kirtan.
Mystical Kirtan with Mirabai Moon offers a passionate embrace of the Divine Essence right here, right now... in your embodied, human form, just as you are. Her music takes listeners on a journey, flowing effortlessly from ethereal dreaminess to soulful blues and jazz.

She honed her craft studying vocal improvisation with Jazz legend Bobby McFerrin and Rhiannon of Voicestra. After nearly two decades of songwriting and three original albums, she fell in love with the practice of Kirtan. In 2010, Mirabai devoted herself as a Bhakta, singing sacred chants in Sanskrit, sharing her profound love of the Divine with others through call and response devotional chanting.

Kalidas & Amah Devi hail from Asheville, NC, and have been traveling and sharing the transformative practice of chanting mantra for over 20 years. Yogacharya Kalidas blends his background as a professional musician with his devotional nature to create a uniquely accessible approach to Kirtan that is both high energy and deeply rooted in spiritual practice. His partner, Amah Devi, is a Bhakti Yoga teacher and community mentor who has been on the path of sacred chant since she was a child. With background in both classical piano and West African drumming, Amah's engaging approach to Kirtan creates an atmosphere of divine play that is a true joy to get lost in.

TubaChristmas

  • 4:30 PM

Category: Free event and Music

2016 is the 43nd anniversary for TUBACHRISTMAS concerts/events which are presented throughout the world. TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Through the legendary William J. Bell we reflect on our heritage and honor all great artists/teachers whose legacy has given us high performance standards, well structured pedagogy, professional integrity, personal values and a camaraderie envied by all other instrumentalists. The first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. Wilder composed many solo and ensemble compositions for tuba and euphonium. He was a loyal supporter of every effort to improve the literature and public image of our chosen instruments. Through Alec Wilder we express our respect and gratitude to all composers who continue to embrace our instruments with their compositions and contribute to the ever growing solo and ensemble repertoire for tuba and euphonium.
