Annual FCAC Theme Show, “Just Imagine,” open to all artists in all media. Opening reception Fri Jan 20, 6:30-8 PM. Free and open to the public. Local artists have entered watercolors, jewelry, oil paintings, mixed media, mosaic tableaux, and hand-made books, each entry judged on the basis of how well the artwork illustrates the theme.

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents painter Bonnie Anders as the featured artist for March. Located in Farragut Town Hall, the exhibit includes scenes from Anders' travels with her husband. She took up painting after retiring from teaching middle school 15 years ago. Her love for color inspired her to purchase paint and brushes, and she was "hooked" after her first project - a still life of a bowl of vegetables on her kitchen table.

Pellissippi State Community College invites the community to "Views of the Big Nothing," a free art exhibit at the Bagwell Center for Media and Art Gallery. "Views of the Big Nothing" features painted works by Brandon Smith joined by physical ropes and metaphorical sculptural works by Travis Townsend.

A reception to meet the artists takes place 3-5 p.m., Jan. 17.

Since 2005 Lee Benson, professor of sculpture and ceramics at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee has worked with his wife Betty, and later their four children, Zach, Aaron, Mary, and Sarah to make sculpture and public works. They work mainly in mixed media, the earth, stone, timber, wood, clay and 24k gold producing large-scale architectural forms as well as figurative, narrative monoliths. Residing across the country, they maintain five studios.

The Bensons have produced works from New York City to Australia and have had wide public recognition. They have also recently developed a relationship with Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity International to use materials used in their sculptures to be repurposed into homes throughout the community.

Knox County Public Library is pleased to partner with Pellissippi State Community College to present "Finding Flannery", a month-long exploration of the life and work of Flannery O' Connor.

Each Tuesday, starting on January 10, Pellissippi State Professor and writer-in-residence, Ed Francisco, will facilitate discussions of O'Connor's work. Despite her premature death at age 39, Flannery O'Connor left behind one of the most haunting and strikingly original bodies of work in 20th century literature. With the rural South as her backdrop, she brought to life a string of eccentric characters torn between their worldly ambitions and the need for a more enduring truth. While critics called her stories "brutal" and "grotesque," O'Connor said, "All my stories are about the action of grace on a character who is not very willing to support it."

Zoo Knoxville is offering “Buy One, Get One Free” admission tickets during Kroger BOGO Days, December 1 through February 28, 2017.

During Kroger BOGO Days, the zoo encourages guests to discover why this is the perfect time to see animals, including red pandas, river otters, elephants, gorillas, red wolves, lions and tigers, actively enjoying the cooler weather. The public opening of the exhibition begins at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 18, with light refreshments and remarks. Following the exhibition opening will be a special showing of “Quarry Project—Tennessee,” an exterior projection by artists Kate Katomski and Judd Mulkerin at 7:00 p.m. at the Knoxville Museum of Art.

East Tennessee marble is prized the world over. Rock of Ages: East Tennessee’s Marble Industry, a new exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society, offers a first-time look into the industry that launched the rock’s fame and crowned Knoxville as the Marble City.

The marble industry was once an important sector of East Tennessee’s economy. By the mid- 1850s, East Tennessee marble from Knox County had been chosen for the interiors of the Tennessee State Capitol and marble from Hawkins County was being installed inside the new House and Senate wings of the United States Capitol. In the decades that followed, East Tennessee’s varicolored marble was sought by architects and patrons for the interiors of a variety of public buildings: state capitol buildings, courthouses, city halls. Tennessee marble would soon also be ordered for high traffic railroad terminal flooring across the United States and Canada. The exhibition includes more than two dozen artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of Tennessee’s unique marble story.

A world-class visual arts exhibition of large-scale outdoor sculpture which enliven downtown Knoxville, the McGhee Tyson Airport and Oak Ridge. Sculpture artist Isaac Duncan III, a Brooklyn, New York native who currently resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee served as the Juror for the 2016-2017 exhibition. #AIPP
