Farragut Town Hall: Mark Littmann Discusses Upcoming Solar Eclipse
Category: Free event, Lecture, panel and Science, nature
Mark Littmann, professor of journalism and electronic media at UT, will discuss the upcoming solar eclipse at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, at Farragut Town Hall, 11408 Municipal Center Drive. He is the author of the book “Totality: The Great American Eclipses of 2017 and 2024,” and has helped lead eclipse expeditions to Canada, Hawaii, Bolivia, Aruba and Turkey. The event is free and open to the public.
A solar eclipse, which happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun, will occur on Aug. 21. The last time a total eclipse was visible in the contiguous U.S. was 1979. While everyone in North America plus parts of South America, Africa, and Europe will see at least a partial eclipse, the 70-mile wide path of totality will only pass through 14 U.S. states.
Farragut is on the northern edge of the path of totality. The partial phase of the eclipse is expected to begin at 1:04 p.m., with totality beginning at 2:33 p.m. and lasting for one minute and 20 seconds.

East Tennessee History Center: A Brown Bag Lecture with Arthur Bohanan
Category: Free event, Lecture, panel and Literature, spoken word, writing
In a Brown Bag Lecture on Wednesday, July 12, Arthur Bohanan will discuss his new book, Prints of a Man, detailing his career of 55 years in the criminal justice field. A curious mind and a high school interest in fingerprints took him from Sevier County to the top of his profession as a forensics specialist, inventor, and crime solver with awards and honors too numerous to list. He is perhaps best known for his invention of a method to take fingerprints from a dead body and for his work to identify bodies from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. His pioneering work included the discovery of the chemical composition of children’s fingerprints and their change at puberty from a water base to an oil base, a key factor when working with the AMBER Alert system and missing children. Bohanan will also discuss his latest fascinating research to discover the rate of decay, cemeteries washed out by floods and hurricanes, and to locate and gender the long dead, in which he reports a 99% accuracy on blind testing.
The program is sponsored by the Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel and Crematory and is free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available. For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824 or visit the website at www.EastTNHistory.org.
