Bearden High School Theatre: Rogers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!"
Category: Kids, family, Music and Theatre
Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!
PERFORMANCES: Nov 9-11 @ 7:30 and Nov 12 @ 2:30
TICKETS: Available in advance at www.beardentheatre.com or at the door. Prices $10-15
LOCATION: Bearden High School, 8352 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919
Free Spirit Theatre: "The Lesson"
Category: Theatre
November 9 – 11: "The Lesson" by Free Spirit Theatre
Free Spirit Theatre brings a masterpiece of absurdist tragicomedy with Eugene Ionesco's The Lesson. A timid professor uses the meanings he assigns to words to establish tyrannical dominance over an eager female student. Ionesco, a citizen of France and Romania, witnessed the atrocities of the Nazi regime firsthand, and his plays juxtapose the tragedy of human destiny against its own ridiculousness.
Thursday, Nov. 9, 10 & 11 at 7:30 PM at Modern Studio
This play may make you laugh or cry, but you'll never guess how it ends.
$15 general admission. Thursday's performance will be followed by a talkback session with the actors and director.
Modern Studio, 109 W Anderson Ave, Knoxville, TN 37917. Information: 865-323-2425, www.modernstudio.org

Mill and Mine: Grizzly Bear
Category: Music
Thursday, November 9 at Mill and Mine in downtown Knoxville.
We're thrilled to announce Grizzly Bear is bringing their baroque indie-folk to Knoxville this fall. The band's albums are exercises in detail—obsessive and a little dark but still amazingly pop-minded, like The Beach Boys had they been raised on Grimm's Fairy Tales instead of the sunny California coast. We can't wait to share this night with you, Knoxville!
