TUBACHRISTMAS (Knoxville)

  • 4:30 PM

Category: Free event and Music

In Knoxville Market Square
CONDUCTOR: Alex Lapins
COORDINATOR: Alexander Lapins 317-294-4743

2017 is the 44th anniversary for TUBACHRISTMAS concerts/events which are presented throughout the world. TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Through the legendary William J. Bell we reflect on our heritage and honor all great artists/teachers whose legacy has given us high performance standards, well structured pedagogy, professional integrity, personal values and a camaraderie envied by all other instrumentalists. The first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. Wilder composed many solo and ensemble compositions for tuba and euphonium. He was a loyal supporter of every effort to improve the literature and public image of our chosen instruments. Through Alec Wilder we express our respect and gratitude to all composers who continue to embrace our instruments with their compositions and contribute to the ever growing solo and ensemble repertoire for tuba and euphonium.

Cookies and apple cider will warm the day at the East Tennessee Historical Society’s Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 9. Activities include craft demonstrations and the sale of handmade items, free ornament and craft making for the kids, and holiday refreshments. Local crafter Karen Micheletta will have a selection of her handmade items made from antique quilts to purchase. In conjunction with the Stories in Stitches: Quilts from the East Tennessee Historical Society’s Permanent Collection exhibit, members of the Smoky Mountain Quilt Guild will present a quilt turning from 1:00-3:00, where visitors can get an up-close look at historic quilts and learn about quilt history. Merikay Waldvogel, nationally and internationally recognized quilt expert, member of the Quilters Hall of Fame, and exhibition co-currator, will be offering gallery tours and answering questions in the exhibit.

Visitors are invited to browse the ETHS Museum Store for a 10% discount on a great selection of traditional gifts, history books, and children's items. Knoxville Gay Men's Chorus: Do You Hear What I Hear?

Category: Music

The Knoxville Gay Men’s Chorus (KGMC), under the artistic direction of Dr. Alan Stevens, will present its annual holiday concert. The “Do You Hear What I Hear” concert is filled with familiar holiday tunes that have gotten a little bit twisted!

“The show features the characters of Christmas Past, Present, and Future taking us on a journey through the insanity of the holiday season, both the joy and frustration we find in our friends and family, and the beauty of sharing the season with those around us,” Dr. Stevens said. “Along the way we will bump into a naughty Santa Claus, his peculiarly under-dressed helper elf, and a few kings (and queens) from around the globe! Do not miss this feel-good concert that you will put you in the mood for your holiday of choice!”

The choir was founded in 2012 with just 15 singers and has now grown to more than 60 members from across East Tennessee. The volunteer chorus meets for weekly rehearsals and commits to learning and performing the songs from memory. In addition to the large chorus, a smaller ensemble group also performs with the choir and at community events throughout the greater Knoxville area. Dr. Stevens, who is beginning his fourth year as the KGMC artistic director, is also the Associate Director of Choral Activities and Coordinator of Vocal Music Education at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN.

Tickets are $21.50 for general admission and $20.50 for seniors and students. They can be purchased through the KGMC website at http://www.knoxgmc.org. At the Bijou Theatre, 803 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. Information/tickets: 865-522-0832, www.knoxbijou.com, www.ticketmaster.com
