Marble City Opera / Cathedral Arts: Amahl and the Night Visitors

Category: Kids, family, Music and Theatre

Based on Italian folk tales of the Nativity and Epiphany, Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors is a short opera originally created for television that retells the story of the Magi from the point of view of a young disabled boy named Amahl. The boy lives in poverty with his widowed mother near Bethlehem, and one night he sees a bright star in the night sky. Three kings loaded with treasure and gifts, have been following that same star in search of “the Child” and come across Amahl and his mother’s meager hut seeking shelter. What happens next is truly a Christmas miracle! A vivid and accessible tale, Amahl and the Night Visitors is a perfect first opera--or hundredth!

Performances are December 8 at 7:30 PM and December 10 at 3 PM. Tickets can be purchased on line at https://marblecityopera.brownpapertickets.com.

Tennessee Theatre: Robert Earl Keen

Category: Music

Robert Earl Keen has blazed a peer, critic, and fan-lauded trail that's earned him icon and keeper of the flame status in Americana music. With 19 albums under his belt, Keen’s latest recording, Live Dinner Reunion, recorded at Floore's Country Store celebrating the 20th anniversary of the quintessential No. 2 Live Dinner is the stuff of honky-tonk legend. A night that reminded us why we love live music!

While all of Robert Earl Keen’s shows are high-energy and full of great music and personal anecdotes that always incite hardy laughter from the crowd, his Christmas shows are magical. Keen’s holiday fan-favorite, "Merry Christmas from the Fam-O-Lee,” has become the calling card for the season – and 2017 marks the sixth year that Keen has made this tour even more spectacular by adding a playful set straight out of the smash hit’s holiday yarn!

The stage comes alive with visions not only of sugar plums, elves and maybe a cow or two, but also with the spirit of country music’s greatest artists, both past and present, and Keen and company performing his biggest hits.

It’s been said that Robert Earl Keen is the Jimmy Buffet of Christmas – and this show unleashes the holiday mischief, fun, and great music that only REK can deliver! Sure to become part of your Christmas family traditions!

River & Rail Theatre Company: The Unusual Tale of Mary & Joseph's Baby

Category: Theatre

Thursday, December 7 through Sunday, December 24.
The Unusual Tale of Mary & Joseph's Baby dares to take the classic story at its word. There really is a pregnant virgin. There are shepherds, angels, foreign dignitaries (a.k.a. wise men), a ratty extra room/stable at an inn, and a maniacal, bloodthirsty dictator whose menacing shadow hangs over everything.

And obviously, it's a comedy. Seriously it is.
The Unusual Tale of Mary & Joseph's Baby surprises both virgin-believing and non-virgin-believing audiences alike by telling the most over-told story in a sincerely human way that bursts with imagination and wonder.
