Lights & L’Chaim at Heska Amuna Synagogue
Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events and Music
The Jewish observance of Hannukah, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” begins officially on December 12. But “Lights & L’Chaim” will usher in the spirit of holiday lights and liveliness just a little bit early – on Sunday, December 3. Attendees are guaranteed an amazing evening of Jewish klezmer music, delicious Jewish and Hannukah-themed foods, and an opportunity to learn about Jewish and Yiddish culture.
Attendees can expect an energizing, interesting and unique musical experience from local Knoxville klezmer band Dor L’Dor – which means “generation to generation” in Hebrew. It describes the make-up of the band, and also honors Jewish history. Klezmer musicians centuries ago would pass down this rich musical tradition to their children.
“Klezmer music is a tradition of Jews from Eastern Europe,” explains Ken Brown, a founder of the band. “My wife and I started Dor L’Dor in 1999. Our children have been members throughout the years, even as they juggled college and other activities. We’ve been fortunate enough to have other talented musicians join us, particularly some from the University of Tennessee’s music program. We’re excited to invite all of Knoxville to experience this concert.”
Event chair Anna Iroff-Bailey is ready to welcome the community into her synagogue. “L’chaim is a traditional Jewish toast that simply means, ‘To Life!’ We’re looking forward to celebrating the holiday season with our neighbors and community friends – to share our culture and raise a toast to life with all of you.”
This event benefits Heska Amuna Synagogue’s religious school and its activities. Dor L’Dor’s latest CD release, (Almost) All Grown Up will be celebrated during the evening.
At Heska Amuna Synagogue, 3811 Kingston Pike (in Sequoyah Hills)
For more information and to purchase tickets, visit http://heskaamuna.org/lights-and-lchaim/
