Lights and L'Chaim: Community Hanukkah Celebration

  • December 15, 2019
  • 3:00PM

Category: Fundraisers, History, heritage, Kids, family and Music

The Jewish observance of Hanukkah, also known as the "Festival of Lights," will be celebrated at the Foundry on Sunday, December 15, at "Lights & L'Chaim" – a community-wide event to usher in the spirit of holiday celebrations. "L'Chaim" means "To Life!" in Hebrew. And Lights & L'Chaim will definitely celebrate our many traditions with delightful music and delicious foods featuring holiday-inspired menu and songs from Klezmer, gospel, soul, and Arabic traditions.

This year's program offers a special treat: combining the energizing musical experience of local Knoxville band Dor L'Dor with the outstanding jazz, gospel, and soul sounds of vocalist (and ukulele player extraordinaire) Kelle Jolly and her multi-woodwind instrumentalist husband Will Boyd, two of the leading figures in Knoxville's jazz scene. Also joining the program this year will be members of Sawt al-Wadi ("Voice of the Valley," formerly known as the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble) directed by Dr. Lillie Gordon and members of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Praise Team.

Proceeds will support Heska Amuna Synagogue's new community outreach initiative slated to begin in 2020 to revitalize the inspirational efforts of Gene Rosenberg, a congregant who died last year. Gene single-handedly engaged thousands of children, teens, and adults through his "traveling trunk" program. He filled trunks with artifacts from hate crimes – shackles, a piece of the World Trade Center, a charred cross – to encourage dialogue on promoting tolerance for all people. Funds will provide educator stipends to share this program across our community.

Sunday, December 15, 2019. Doors open at 2:00 pm; music begins at 3:00 pm
Light buffet of holiday foods follows the concert (approximately at 5:00 pm)
The Foundry, 747 Worlds Fair Park Drive, Knoxville
For more information/tickets: https://heskaamuna.org
Ticket prices: $10 for children, under 12; $45 for adults.
VIP packages and sponsorship opportunities also available

MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS is celebrating its 46th Anniversary (1974-2019). Created by Harvey Phillips, MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS 2018 concerts will be presented in over 300 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Phillips was inspired to create TUBACHRISTMAS as an annual event honoring his mentor/teacher the late great tubist William J. Bell (born Christmas Day 1902).

Every Christmas season, tuba and euphonium players of all ages, from specific geographic areas, gather to pay respect – through William J. Bell – to all the great artists/teachers who represent their heritage. Every TUBACHRISTMAS performance features traditional Christmas carols especially arranged (for the first TUBACHRISTMAS, December 22, 1974 on “The Rink at Rockefeller Center”) by American composer Alec Wilder (died Christmas Eve 1980). Through Wilder, TUBACHRISTMAS concerts pay grateful tribute to composers who have embraced these noble instruments with solo and ensemble compositions. Depending on the population of any given geographic area, TUBACHRISTMAS ensembles may attract multiples of 100 participants aged 8 to over 90 years! The warm, rich organ-like sound of the tuba-euphonium choir has won the ears and hearts of every audience. It is no wonder that TUBACHRISTMAS has become an established Christmas tradition in cities throughout the world.

Oak Ridge Art Center: Selections from the Permanent Collection

  • December 14, 2019 — February 1, 2020

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

In this season full of holidays, family and remembrance, our collection serves to connect our current Art Center family and those who worked to sustain and preserve our program in the past. Among them are artists, collectors, and family and friends of both. Selections from the Permanent Collection will represent individuals who created, those who collected, and those who contributed to our ability to share the amazing variety and diversity of art with our regional community. Each group represents many memories—funny, fond, and maybe a few not-so-fond—of the individuals who helped make the Art Center a community asset and keep it viable for us to enjoy today.

We are assembling a group work that represents all three of these groups of people—artists, collectors and contributors. Many of the artists represented have been or were members of the Art Center, or have been associated with our program. Others have been, or were, instructors at the Art Center and/or have shown with us in their careers.

We will have a wealth of wonderful pieces to represent the collectors in our midst. Lovingly collected by members and individuals from around the region the pieces were later donated to the Art Center to leave a lasting impact on the cultural tenor of our region. Work included in this group are both regional and international in scope. Sharing these works with our visitors and their delight in viewing work of this caliber in our area is very special. This promises to be a delightful walk down memory lane with some of our favorite people and their memories.

Oak Ridge Art Center, 201 Badger Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Hours: Tu-F 9-5, Sa-M 1-4. Information: 865-482-1441, www.oakridgeartcenter.org
