Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 19th for the Fifth Annual UT Arboretum Society Butterfly Festival. Activities will go live online at 10:00 a.m.
In accordance with University of Tennessee guidelines for COVID-19 precautions, this year’s festival will be presented online. Co-sponsored by the UT Institute of Agriculture, this event has become one of the most popular events annually with over 2,000 people attending in 2019. This will be a different festival than in the past, but we are excited to bring you some great online options.
A release of over 200 Painted Lady butterflies and educational talks will be among the activities available online. Speakers will be naturalist Kris Light who will be speaking on, “The Magnificent Migration of the Monarch Butterflies to Mexico!” and area naturalist and author Stephen Lyn Bales on, “The Miracle of Metamorphosis.”
More details on how to participate in the Festival including local craft vendors offerings will be forthcoming through local media and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/UTArboretum/.
The Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of ten outdoor laboratories located throughout the state as part of the UT AgResearch system. AgResearch is a division of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research and public service through the UT Herbert College of Agriculture, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch and UT Extension offices, with locations in every county in the state.

Mabry-Hazen House: Fall Clean-up Day
Category: Festivals, special events, Free event and Science, nature
As summer bids farewell, it's time to clean up its "mess." This summer was hot but the flora on Mabry's Hill still was prolific so the site needs a healthy trim before fall and winter set. And with over 7 acres of green space there is plenty of space to spread out and safely social distant!
Mabry-Hazen will hold a fall cleaning day on Saturday, September 19, 2020 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Only have 2 hours? No worries, all are welcome to come and go as they please.
Activities will include leaf and brush removal, mulching, dead tree removal, garden bed weed removal, and general grounds cleaning. Some tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring rakes, shears, shovels, tarps, pruners, trowels, and similar yard and garden tools.
Water and refreshments will be provided. Free t-shirts for those participating (certain sizes are limited)!
UT Gardens: Friday Fun Day: Virtual Bewitching Beasts
Category: Festivals, special events and Kids, family
Date: October 31, 2020
Cost: $8 per child or 4 children for $24
Bewitching Beasts is going virtual! We will still do all the fun crafts and learn about bewitching beasts all while being in the comfort of our own homes. Then on Halloween we will send you links to several videos to watch that will show you how to make each craft and give you information about interesting living things. Additionally, from Friday through Sunday, you will be able to visit the gardens to take pictures by various signs and photo spots. Send us your pictures by 4pm on Sunday to receive a prize. Don’t forget to be in costume for all of your pictures!

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Fundraisers
Proceeds to benefit local artists through the Grace Fund (www.knoxalliance.com/grace)
Introducing Mask-Produced, a virtual exhibition and auction of ‘mask-related’ artworks created by a talented array of local and regional artists. 29 pieces were created for the exhibition using a variety of materials including metal, leather, Swarovski Crystals, denim, animal bones, fabric, paint, glass, and more. Proceeds from the auction will provide critical funding to the Greater Knoxville GRACE Fund, a resource for individual local arts and culture workers seeking financial assistance to meet basic needs.
As masks are becoming the new normal across the globe, artists are coming up with innovative designs and imaginative possibilities to elevate the everyday face covering. Mask-Produced explores both the protective and artistic potential of masks amid the coronavirus pandemic.
