UT College of Arts & Sciences: Linguistic Diversity in the Classroom
Category: Free event and Lecture, panel
Jessi Grieser, Assistant Professor, Department of English
One way of being actively anti-racist in the classroom is being aware of language variation and appreciative of linguistic diversity. In her presentation, Jessi Grieser, assistant professor of English, will explore the workings of standard language ideology and the principle of linguistic subordination. She will explain how we can move away from “correct English” in our assessment strategies and toward inclusive strategies that respect language variation.
Registration is required in advance. Register here and after registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing the Zoom link and password. https://artsci.utk.edu/college-of-arts-sciences-allyship-antiracism-initiative/college-conversations-allyship-antiracism/

Join us for a fun class in which you learn how to make mocktails (non-alcoholic mixed beverages) that are perfect for the season. We will teach you how to make the best simple syrups and how to get those mixed drinks looking perfect, too.
This class will be online and will be recorded. Each participant will receive a shopping list ahead of the class, and we will provide some of the materials (such as herbs like rosemary). As long as you register, you will have access to view the class after it is completed.

Zoo Knoxville: Pop-Up "Craft Bear" Night
Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events and Fundraisers
Zoo Knoxville is hosting a special pop-up “Craft Bear Night” on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. This family-friendly event will feature local craft beers from Pretentious Beer Co. and Blackberry Farms Brewery, Captain Muchachos food truck and an Octoberfest-inspired menu from the zoo’s own chef.
The evening will showcase a special limited release beer brewed by Pretentious Beer Co. made with prickly pear fruit harvested from the zoo’s own cactuses. Called “Heroes in a Halfshell (Tortoise Power)”, this IPA is available at the Pretentious Beer Co. Taproom in the Old City beginning Friday, Nov. 13.
Pretentious Beer Co. is donating a portion of sales to the Radiated Tortoise SAFE program. Zoo Knoxville is proud to be a founding partner of this initiative, which supports our conservation partners in Madagascar working to save these endangered reptiles from extinction.
The radiated tortoise is suffering a catastrophic decline in the wild due to over collection by the black market pet trade in Southeast Asia, as well as habitat destruction. In the beginning of this century it was estimated that 12 million radiated tortoises roamed southwestern Madagascar; now that number has drastically reduced to 3 million tortoises. At this rate, radiated tortoises will be extinct in the wild within the next 15-20 years without our help.
With 53 acres to explore, the zoo offers guests plenty of space to safely distance while enjoying the weather and wildlife. The Fuzzy-Go-Round Carousel and Zoo Choo Train will also be open, weather permitting.
A general admission ticket is required for ages 4 and up. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Annual passholders and Circle of Friends members get free entry and parking. All food and beverage are an additional purchase and valid I.D. is required for beer and wine purchases. Tickets may be purchased online in advance or at the front gate. https://www.zooknoxville.org/event/craft-bear-nights/

Big Ears presents Norwegian Digital Jazz Festival
Category: Festivals, special events and Music
Running November 6 thru December 11, ‘Sites & Sounds from Big Ears’ hosts the Norwegian Digital Jazz Festival, a 15-act series highlighting many of the most compelling artists from that nation’s fertile musical scene.
Big Ears is teaming up with Musikkprofil Booking & Management, Oslo’s Sentralen performing arts center, and Hes & Falck to present the series which launches on Friday, November 6 and spans five weeks of programming. Big Ears is the exclusive North American presenter of the festival — the only place in the US, Canada, and Mexico where you can stream the series.
Norway has been home to a rich jazz landscape for decades, an ecosystem that has been documented notably over the years by ECM Records. The festival offers a multi-faceted portrait of the country’s unique jazz scene, over seven double-bill concerts, featuring artists including pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, saxophonist Tryvge Seim, guitarist Eiven Aarset, and trumpeters Mathias Eick and Nils Petter Molvær, plus an evening with pianist Tord Gustavsen — as well as many other essential Norwegian jazz artists. Each performance has been elegantly filmed on-site at the Sentralen in Oslo, Norway.

November Featured Artists
Terri Swaggerty, Painting
For me the process of creating Art is the place where soul meets body. I look for and discover Art every single day; in manmade structures, the natural world and even while looking down while crossing a street or parking lot. I especially like to document the many and varied details of Knoxville, my hometown. What I see and experience constantly sparks a creative response in me. I use my experience as a pro photographer and pro retouch artist to transform the literal image into a work of Art.
Elaine Fronczek
I come from a family that has made beautiful and functional objects with their hands. My mother baked, my grandmother sewed and crocheted, my father and aunt were multitalented. At an early age I could usually be found in my grandmother’s sewing room creating my first designs. Fiber fascinated me and drew me in. It was an avocation for over 50 years. In 2008 I attended a class at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts where I learned to wet felt. Here I realized that wool, silk and other natural fibers could be manipulated into both 2 and 3 dimensional creations in the shape and color of my choosing. Thus I began my current pursuit in the world of fiber. I am inspired by the colors of nature and the simplicity and functionality of pieces created by contemporary artists and designers. Using natural renewable materials and repurposed items allows me to create simple pieces that bring beauty and comfort to the eye.

UT Downtown Gallery: Shiny by David Wilson
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Join us for First Friday reception from 5-8pm on Friday November 6. Ten visitors at a time will be permitted in the UT Downtown Gallery. Please bring a mask to wear. We look forward to seeing you!
Shiny, an upcoming exhibition by Professor Emeritus David Wilson at the UT Downtown Gallery, will feature 49 drawings of imitation silver leaf on translucent vellum.
Wilson began his academic career at the UT School of Art in 1985. He uses non-traditional materials and approaches, including process and chance, in his large temporary artworks and drawings. The drawings in Shiny rely on reflected light to reveal the image.
“This exhibition is an opportunity to realize images that have been in my head for a long time and to do so using a process that makes them new.”
All the drawings in Shiny are available for purchase, and proceeds benefit the UT School of Art David C. Wilson Community Outreach Endowment that supports local community engagement projects and initiatives by students and faculty. The endowment was established in honor of Wilson’s service to the School of Art by his long-time friends and School of Art development council members Sarah and Oliver Smith.
The exhibition runs through Wednesday, November 25. The UT Downtown Gallery is open Wednesday - Friday, 11am - 6pm and Saturdays 10am - 3pm. https://downtown.utk.edu/
