The Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS) may have suspended public screenings for the time being, but archivists Eric Dawson and John Morton are busy as ever. Now, they're ready to show and tell what they’ve been up to down in the archive this past year!

Join us Wednesday, April 14 at 7 p.m on Zoom as TAMIS archivists Eric and John share some recently preserved and digitized historical footage from right here in East Tennessee.

You'll see civic events and domestic vignettes from right here in Knoxville. Some footage rekindles the public memory of our community, while other scenes make you feel like a part of the family. All this and a forgotten local news interview with Dolly Parton that hasn't been seen for nearly 50 years!

The Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) is is excited to present “Writing the Body,” a workshop led by Arya Samuelson on April 14, 2021 from 6-7:30PM. This event will be held over Zoom.

Our bodies are made of stories. Heat. Sensation. Illness. Spasms. Tears. Even in numbness or dissociation, the body speaks. Writing the body is one of the most powerful ways to draw in a reader. As soon as someone names a sensation—an ear twitch, a quickened pulse, the ache of longing in a shoulder—we can practically feel it as our own. Together, we'll explore how to tap into the body's language and unearth its stories. We'll explore writing the body as a process, on the page, and as a way to put together a story. No matter your writing background, ambitions, or genre, this class will help you tap into your embodied wisdom and discover new stories waiting to be told.

The Knoxville Bar Association is pleased to announce that a telephone-only Faith and Justice Legal Advice Clinic will be held on April 13, 14, and 15, 2021 in order to best protect the health of all participants. The goal of the Faith and Justice Alliance is to build a coalition of faith leaders in the Knoxville area and to host legal advice clinics to give people a less intimidating environment to talk to a lawyer. Since an in-person legal advice clinic is not yet practical, community faith partners Second United Methodist Church, Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, Ball Camp Baptist Church, the Muslim Community of Knoxville, First Baptist Church, Immaculate Conception Church, and Faith Lutheran Church have joined the effort to publicize this clinic to their congregants and communities and encourage those in need of legal advice to participate.

The Tennessee Faith & Justice Alliance is a project of the Tennessee Access to Justice Commission. In the Knoxville area, the program is coordinated by the Knoxville Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, the University of Tennessee College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, and the generous lawyers, law students, and others volunteering their time and talent. This is a general advice clinic with volunteers prepared to advise on a wide variety of legal issues, including family law, landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, criminal defense, consumer protection, contract disputes, child support, and personal injury, among other issues.

Be available on April 13, 14 and 15 to receive a call from the attorney who will discuss the situation and provide the advice.
On the intake and consultation dates, participants must be prepared to answer calls from unknown or unlisted numbers.

My name is Bo McGuire. I am the first grandchild of the late, great Evelyn Louise Blanton-Washington of Gadsden, Alabama. Now, even though I conjure her as a great historical figure, y’all don’t know her. Not yet. She is my mama’s mama, my Nanny, and I speak of her as royalty because she is—queen of my heart, my imagination. She was the savior of my young, incredibly queer life in the sometimes cruel geography of rural, working-class Alabama.

Socks on Fire is a lyrical testament to Southern women couched in the battle for my grandmother’s throne. I returned home from New York City to find that my Aunt Sharon, my favorite childhood relative, had locked her gay, drag-queen brother, my Uncle John, out of the family home. As a queer Southerner, who can be both equally protective and skeptical of the South, Aunt Sharon stoked a fire within me to document the place and the people I call home. Through a series of stylized reenactments spun in with family VHS footage, Socks on Fire documents the fluidity of identity, personality, and performance in my hometown among my Mama’s people.

The Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture is pleased to present the first group of three MFA Thesis Exhibitions. In partial fulfillment of their graduation requirements, students pursuing the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are required to mount a solo exhibition of work. These exhibitions take the form of small groups of students presenting concurrent solo exhibitions in the Ewing Gallery.

“Chain Maille Jewelry, the Ripples Bracelet,” with George Gallant. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including a $25 materials fee) is $55 for members or $60 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 2, maximum is 6.

FRIDAY, APRIL 16
“Watercolor 101, for Beginners,” with Vera Bogle. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, and maximum is 8.

TUESDAY, APRIL 20 (in person at the Plateau Creative Arts Center and also on Zoom)
Monthly Members Meeting: 9:30 a.m. In-person attendance will be limited due to social distancing.

Project Discussion, a bi-monthly artwork review session. Assess the artwork of participants and/or selected artwork in the gallery. The facilitator is John Anderson. 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. FREE and open to the public. Bring your artwork or just observe the session.

THURSDAY, APRIL 22
“Wire-Wrapped Natural Stones and Shells,” with Susan Smathers. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, maximum is 8.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28
Life Drawing, with Dena Whitener, 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. A live model will be available for artists to sketch. Bring your sketch pad, media of choice, and camera to capture the pose. Cost is $5 model fee.
