“Desperately Seeking Nancy: A Search to Learn More about Nancy, Jonesborough Abolitionist Elihu Embree’s Enslaved Woman”

Join the East Tennessee Historical Society on April 21, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. via Zoom as we welcome Anne G’Fellers Mason, Executive Director of the Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia Heritage Alliance, to share her search for Nancy’s story; the story of an enslaved woman in 19th century Jonesborough, TN, whose experience will be dramatically voiced through a piece of museum theatre, scripted by Ms. Mason and based on the original, primary sources uncovered during her research.

In 1820, Elihu Embree published Jonesborough’s The Emancipator, the first periodical dedicated solely to the cause of abolitionism. In reality, Embree never truly lived up to his principles. Ms. Mason has worked to track Embree’s journey with abolitionism and the lives of the people he enslaved, including Nancy and her children who were manumitted in Embree’s will.

This program is the first in a series of Zoom Brown Bag programs and Saturday lectures to be offered this spring and summer. Sponsored the Albers Family Foundation in memory of Harriet Z. Albers and by Gentry-Griffey Funeral Home in Knoxville, the East Tennessee Historical Society is privileged to share the good work of history being done around East Tennessee, by East Tennesseans, and about East Tennessee’s story with our members and the public.

For the past twelve years, the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville and the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) have partnered to present a biannual exhibition entitled “Arts in the Airport”. This juried exhibition was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. • April 20, 6-8 PM: Learning Series - The Negative will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn to load and process your film. $60, 3 participants.
• April 21, 2-4 PM: Learning Series - The Print will take you inside The Darkroom where you will learn the basics of enlarger use, burning and dodging and developing finished prints. For this class, you must bring your developed film and B&W photo paper. $60, 3 participants.
• April 22, 6-8 PM: Earth Day Cyanotype Prints - Learn one of the original photographic processes! Cyanotype is one of the oldest printing processes invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. In this workshop, you will learn to make a unique one of a kind handmade print by coating various papers with Cyanotype chemicals and developing them in the sun. $40, 5 participants. Register by April 19.

The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art presents Artists on Location 2021 – an art show and sale at the Knoxville Museum of Art the evening of Saturday, April 24 from 5:30-9pm. Reservations will be required, check www.knoxart.org for details. Artists on Location 2021 promotes the museum’s connection to the local and regional art community and provides both new and seasoned collectors a rare opportunity to buy original paintings of Knoxville and East Tennessee.

From Monday, April 19 through Friday, April 23, talented artists selected through a careful, juried process will be painting outdoors in and around the Knoxville area. The public is invited to watch AOL’s artists in action as they capture on canvas a wide variety of subject matter, from urban street scenes to pastoral garden settings. The artists’ specific locations will be published on the KMA website, www.knoxart.org prior to the event and will be followed on the KMA Guild’s Instagram page @artistsonlocation.

This annual art show and sale will be held Saturday, April 24 and COVID-19 safety protocols will be in effect. Proceeds of the sale will benefit both participating artists and the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Painting in open air or plein-air became popular in the mid-19th century with artists of the French Impressionist movement seeking to paint light and its ephemeral qualities. The practice of painting on location increased in popularity with the development of transportable paint tubes and box easels.

“Chain Maille Jewelry, the Ripples Bracelet,” with George Gallant. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including a $25 materials fee) is $55 for members or $60 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 2, maximum is 6.

FRIDAY, APRIL 16
“Watercolor 101, for Beginners,” with Vera Bogle. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, and maximum is 8.

Project Discussion, a bi-monthly artwork review session. Assess the artwork of participants and/or selected artwork in the gallery. The facilitator is John Anderson. 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. FREE and open to the public. Bring your artwork or just observe the session.

“Wire-Wrapped Natural Stones and Shells,” with Susan Smathers. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, maximum is 8.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28
Life Drawing, with Dena Whitener, 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. A live model will be available for artists to sketch. Bring your sketch pad, media of choice, and camera to capture the pose. Cost is $5 model fee.
