Knoxville History Project: Christmas History at Maple Hall
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
Tuesday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m. at maple Hall, 414 S. Gay Street
At Maple Hall this month we’ll talk some Christmas history, which is full of surprises, but we’ll also be talking about what we have to sell that might be fun to open on Christmas morning. The Knoxville History Project has several books out, some of them fancy enough to wrap, some of them more in the order of stocking stuffers. We’ll be talking about the Historic Bearden book which came out about a year ago, already a Knox Heritage award winner, as well as our East Tennessee Historical Society award-winning Historic Knoxville: The Curious Visitors’ Guide. We’ll have copies of Jack Neely’s longest-ever book, the recent hardback The Old City: A Short History—and several of our small (and inexpensive) paperbacks, including those with stories about Christmases long, long ago, like Holidays and Festivals and A Knoxville Christmas. As well as Laura Still’s very recent book about the Suffrage movement, A Fair Shake, which includes the equivalent of a walking tour of downtown Knoxville as known to the triumphant Suffragists. (We may even have copies of our latest collection, Knoxville Lives III.) Personalized signatures will be handy if you need them. We also have our Knoxville History playing cards. In fact, you may be able to knock out all your Christmas shopping that one evening, and enjoy supper and a few drinks while you’re doing it.
We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, of course, and all the proceeds go to the Knoxville History Project. Our nonprofit board of directors decides what to do with them.

River & Rail Theatre Company: The Unusual Tale of Mary & Joseph's Baby
Category: Theatre
THE UNUSUAL TALE OF MARY & JOSEPH’S BABY – meant for the virgin-believing and non-virgin-believing alike, this musical dares to take the nativity story at its word with whimsy, humor, and humanity. There really was a pregnant virgin. There really are shepherds and angels and foreign dignitaries (a.k.a. wise men). There’s a ratty extra room/stable at the inn, and a maniacal, bloodthirsty dictator whose menacing shadow hangs over everything. And obviously, it’s a comedy. When people engage this over-told story on a sincere human level, it bursts with imagination and wonder.
Previews: Dec. 8-9
Performances: Dec. 10-12; Dec. 15-19; Dec. 21-23
