Museum of Appalachia: Celebrating Independence Day with Anvil Shoots

  • July 4, 2022

Category: Festivals, special events, History, heritage and Kids, family

While most Americans celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, the Museum of Appalachia marks the occasion with old-fashioned “anvil shoots.” Every 4th of July, the Museum uses gunpowder to send 150-pound anvils barreling into the sky. “When the gunpowder ignites and the anvil soars into the air, the earth literally shakes,” says Museum President, Elaine Meyer. “The explosion can be heard for several miles.”

Anvil shoots were once a common way for pioneers to celebrate holidays, elections, and other special occasions. While the tradition of anvil-shooting is nearly obsolete, the Museum keeps this unique and exciting pastime alive for a 21st century audience.

Anvil shoots will occur at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are available for purchase at www.museumofappalachia.org. The event is free for Museum members. The anvil shoots are the centerpiece of a celebration that includes a bell-ringing ceremony, flag procession, live music, and demonstrations from blacksmiths, spinners, weavers, sawmillers, woodworkers, and more. For more information, visit the Museum’s website, call 865-494-7680, or e-mail museum@museumofappalachia.org.

Mabry-Hazen House: Fourth of July on Mabry's Hill

Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events, History, heritage and Kids, family

Mabry-Hazen House is hosting an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration on Monday, July 4th, 2022 from 5-10pm! Gather with us to celebrate Independence Day, the Declaration of Independence, and community. Enjoy great views, good food and beer, live music, fun games, great company and tours of the 1858 house. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and spread out on our 7 acres of greenspace near downtown and right off I-40.

Our event recalls the spirit of 19th century Independence Day celebrations when communities gathered for patriotic revelry and enjoyment. Overlooking downtown Knoxville to the west and the Great Smoky Mountains to south, historic Mabry's Hill enjoys a spectacular view of the fireworks presented by the City of Knoxville and revelers around the city and county. Take it easy with this laid-back celebration. It is the perfect time to come chill on the hill! Take in the surrounding natural beauty and history. Savor food from Dia De Foods and other food trucks. Quence your thirst with beverages from Xul Beer Co. and other local breweries.

We'll also have several activities for kids and the young at heart including sack races, watermelon seed spitting contests, three-legged races, bocce, croquet, corn hole, and much more. Tinca Tinca will bring their retro-futuristic indie-rock and electronic sound for attendees to groove and enjoy. We'll have a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Purchase tickets to join in a cake walk and possibly take home a delicious cake from a local bakery! Trotta Montgomery Realty Company will be back with Biscuit the pony! And the historic house museum will open for self-guided tours.

Tickets for adults (16+) are $15 ( includes two drink tickets), children (ages 5-15) are $5, members of Mabry-Hazen House are $10, and children under 5 are free. All proceeds benefit our educational and preservation missions! Event will occur rain or shine.

Festival on the 4th at World's Fair Park

  • July 4, 2022

Category: Culinary arts, food, Free event, Kids, family and Music

The City of Knoxville’s largest event of the year, Festival on the 4th, returns to the World’s Fair Park Festival and Performance lawns on Monday, July 4.

Activities and live music performances begin at 5 p.m., culminating at 8 p.m. with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s 38th Annual Free Pilot Company Independence Day Concert and a fireworks show launched from the Henley Bridge at approximately 9:40 p.m.

Planners canceled the event in 2020 due to the risks of spreading COVID-19 with large gatherings, and 2021’s was a modified celebration over the course of two nights. This year, Festival on the 4th includes all the elements guests have come to expect: food trucks; free activities including mini golf games, water balloon fights and paddle boats; and live music from Jenna Rose, followed by ‘80s cover band The Vibraslaps on the Festival Lawn starting at 5 p.m.

“It has been so much fun planning this year's festival,” says Office of Special Events Director Kyndra Brewer. “It is a night to create memories with your family and friends.”

The event is rain or shine, so guests should come prepared. Bring chairs, blankets, sunscreen and water bottles to fill at the water station located next to the Performance Lawn entrance or the Knoxville Utilities Board’s water station.

No alcohol or personal tents/canopies will be permitted on the fair site. Please leave pets at home for their own safety and comfort.

Free parking is available in the World's Fair and Blackstock parking lots and the following garages: 11th Street (includes ADA parking), Locust Street, Walnut Street, State Street and Market Square.

For more information about Festival on the Fourth and other events produced by the City’s Office of Special Events, visit www.KnoxvilleTN.gov/events or call 865-215-4248.
