This 6-part series of foundation level workshops will cover a variety of yoga-related topics, the first being fundamentals of asana alignment. In each 2.5 hour class, we'll break down sun salutations and standing postures, thoroughly examining their alignment from the perspective of external pose shape and internal subtle energy dynamics. We'll explore several different approaches for each asana, and learn how to effectively modify down (easier) and up (more challenging). Additionally, we'll go over hands-on adjustments for all poses and modifications. Learning to adjust asana is particularly helpful in integrating an of understanding subtle energy dynamics. Each session will close with Yoga Nidra and deep relaxation.

JANUARY 21, SATURDAY, WORKSHOP VIA ZOOM: 10:00 AM -- Noon

We all have a story to tell. Why not tell yours? Whether you want to write your own memories or explore and share your family history in words, begin the new year right by starting (or jump-starting) your creative writing project in this brief workshop! We’ll use short “snapshots” or published pieces and writing prompts as inspiration to begin new work together in this supportive and interactive writing-intensive workshop. Suitable for all levels.

Sonja Livingston is the author of four books of nonfiction, including Ghostbread, a memoir of childhood poverty which won an AWP Book Prize for Nonfiction and has been widely adopted for classroom use. Sonja’s latest project, 52 Snapshots: A Memoir Starter Kit, provides writing prompts for works of creative nonfiction and memoir. Sonja’s writing has been honored with New York State Arts Fellowship, an Iowa Review Award, a VanderMey Nonfiction Prize, among others. Sonja is an associate professor of creative writing at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Guitarist Jaimie Cameron, veteran of area bands the House Rockers, Big Kabluey, and Jacqui and the Tumble Kings, adds his signature compositions to a danceable and distinctive sound, with harp player Henry Perry, who took early instruction from DeFord Bailey, the only African American member of the early Grand Ole Opry. Slow Blind Hill has been a favorite at Old City clubs, the KMA’s Alive After Five, and at late night swing dances at the Laurel Theater and other venues.

The Episcopal Church of The Ascension at 800 S. Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919 presents Days of Dialogue: A Southern City Speaks. It is an initiative that is being launched to help the people of Knoxville begin the work of learning to gather, dialogue and collaborate with each other in order to better understand and appreciate our diverse community.

The project will kickoff January 21, 2023, with a presentation of the play Incognito written and performed by Michael Sidney Fosberg. It is the true story of his life and he has performed it around the nation at universities, corporations and public institutions to help people begin the process of talking about difficult subjects. Ascension Church will host two performances and the public is invited to register at www.asoutherncityspeaks.org for one of the shows at 10:00 am or 5:00 pm. Teams of people, from book clubs, civic organizations, businesses and cultural institutions, are invited to attend one of the performances. At the conclusion, attendees will receive an invitation to download materials that will help their organizations to begin the dialogue process at their local sites. The play and associated activities are free and available to everyone.

During the months of February, March and April, 2023, groups will receive materials from Days of Dialogue: A Southern City Speaks electronically that can be used to guide discussions, dialogues and conversations. The materials will contain lessons, books to read and various strategies that have been used at Ascension to guide the parish as they discussed difficult subjects. The project will end in late April when registered participants will be invited to a cookout and celebration of the work they have implemented to begin the process of having discussions and dialogues.

Church of the Ascension has implemented ways to speak thoughtfully and with regard to one and another during the past several years. An influential parishioner has provided the church with the opportunity to present Michael Sidney Fosberg to the Knoxville region as a way of spreading the invaluable tools of dialogue and forgiveness. As people search for ways to strengthen the bonds of love in order to keep open the gates of freedom, it is has become very clear that the way to begin is to learn as much as possible about one and another and understand how much we have in common.

We are all in this city and county together. What kind of place do we want to leave our progeny? How can we provide comfort for the less fortunate? What does it mean to believe in the power of many to uplift the ideas that protect the rights of one? Days of Dialogue: A Southern City Speaks is not being launched as a model of perfection…it is being started as a way to be comfortable with dialogues about the uncomfortable. And as Mr. Fosberg learned through many days of anger and uncertainty that in the end, it was his willingness to talk, to dialogue with others and to love and forgive that brought him peace.

The Isaacs, a multi-GRAMMY® nominated family group with roots dating back to 1971, is composed of siblings Ben Isaacs, Sonya Isaacs Yeary and Rebecca Isaacs Bowman, and mother Lily Isaacs. Tight family harmonies blend with contemporary acoustic instrumentation creating a musical style influenced by many genres of music such as country, bluegrass, R&B, folk, contemporary, acoustic, and southern gospel.

The Isaacs are frequent guests on RFD Network’s Larry’s Country Diner and the Grand Ole Opry, and have appeared on the Gaither Homecoming videos and tours for over 20 years. The family has won nine Dove Awards and received GRAMMY® nominations for their past three albums, were inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2020 and became members of the Grand Ole Opry in 2021. The Isaacs feel blessed to be able to travel and spread the message of hope and grace through song and story.

The Appalachian Ballet Company and Clayton Center for the Arts will hold a Broadway workshop entitled An America in Paris - from Audition to Stage on January 21, 2023 from 2 pm - 5 pm on stage in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre at the Clayton Center for the Arts. The workshop is an educational outreach program for aspiring dancers and singers in the community. The free workshop has limited spaces available and those wanting to participate must register in advance through the Clayton Center Box Office by calling 865-981-8590. Box Office hours are 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Tuesday through Friday. No registrations will be accepted on-line.

The workshop artist is Gia Mongell Binner, who made her Broadway debut shortly after graduating from The Juilliard School. As an original cast member of An American in Paris, Gia performed Christopher Wheeldon’s Tony Award-winning choreography at The Palace Theatre on Broadway as well as on the 69th Annual Tony Awards, serving as a swing and assistant dance captain across the run of the show. Upon graduating with her BFA in dance from Juilliard, she was awarded the prestigious Joseph W. Polisi Prize for exemplifying an “Artist as Citizen.” Giving back to the next generation of dancers, Gia has taught on faculty for Lincoln Center Education’s Middle School Arts Bootcamp which provides Art Education for Title I schools in New York City. Gia holds an MFA in Choreography and Performance with a focus in Film from Hunter College.

The workshop will consist of a dance class, audition tips, question and answer time, vocal time and demonstration at end for each other. Participants need character shoes, jazz shoes or tennis shoes. This project is being supported, in whole or in part, by federal award number SLFRP5534 awarded to the state of Tennessee by the U. S. Department of the Treasury.

Jason Brown is an associate professor of Art at the University of TN, Knoxville. His work explores the impact that extractive industries such as mining, oil and gas have on the ecosystems and watersheds of Appalachian landscapes. Coal mining and mountaintop removal are especially compelling subjects for his sculptures and installations, which challenge viewers to engage in a civic dialogue about individuality, community and place.
