I Am, He Said - A Celebration of the Music of Neil Diamond at Niswonger Performing Arts Center, February 11, 7:30 PM .

“We are saying what HE said,” laughs Matt Vee referring to the one and only Neil Diamond. Matt along with cousins Jeff and Tommy Vee, local music scene veterans and sons of the legendary Bobby Vee, join forces with their family and friends as The Killer Vees to celebrate the music from a timeless catalog. With songs like “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “America,” and “Sweet Caroline,” Neil Diamond sold over 100 million records worldwide with music that became the soundtrack to one generation after another with hits spanning five decades. As a Tin Pan Alley song writer in the mid 60s, he penned songs recorded by everyone from Elvis Presley to Deep Purple and, of course, the Monkee’s classic, “I’m A Believer.”

“This is not a tribute show,” says Tommy Vee. “This is a celebration of an amazing musical icon, one we all love and respect. We have recruited an incredible group of singers and players and have gone back to the original records,” he explains. “It is all about the vocals and Matt nails it! It’s a rockin’ show!”

Professor Wendy A. Bach is a nationally recognized expert in both clinical legal education and poverty law. She has been with UT Law since fall 2010.

At the height of the opiate epidemic, Tennessee lawmakers made it a crime for a pregnant woman to transmit narcotics to a fetus. They promised that charging new mothers with this crime would help them receive the treatment and support they often desperately need. In Prosecuting Poverty, Criminalizing Care, Wendy Bach describes the law's actual effect through meticulous examination of the cases of 120 women who were prosecuted for this crime. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data, Bach demonstrates that both prosecuting 'fetal assault', and institutionalizing the all-too-common idea that criminalization is a road to care, lead at best to clinically dangerous and corrupt treatment, and at worst, and far more often, to an insidious smokescreen obscuring harsh punishment. Urgent, instructive, and humane, this retelling demands we stop criminalizing care and instead move towards robust and respectful systems that meet the real needs of families in poor communities.

We have partnered with the Knoxville Asian Festival for our next concert "Bookmarks from Japan" which will be held February 11, 2023, 7:00 PM at Knoxville Catholic High School. The concert will feature a pre-concert "mini-festival" of Japanese displays and demonstrations, and the concert will include works by Japanese composers, a performance from Shamisen Knoxville, and will conclude with American composer Julie Giroux's piece, "Bookmarks from Japan." Tickets will be $10 per person.
