Category: Music

Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) presents another sensational season of performances at Hiwassee College in Madisonville with The Persuasions, acknowledged as "The Kings of A Cappella". Acknowledged as “The Kings of A Capella”, The Persuasions have been together for almost 50 years and proudly boast that the group contains only original and founding members. Over the years, The Persuasions have opened for Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Ray Charles, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor to name but a few. However, it should also be noted that acts such as Roseanne Barr and Bruce Springsteen have opened for The Persuasions. The Persuasions may not have invented A Capella, but they have carried the torch and kept the art form alive for almost five decades. They have recorded and performed songs ranging from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa, from Sam Cooke to Bob Dylan, and from Lennon and McCartney to Rogers and Hammerstein. The Persuasions have paved the way for groups like Boyz To Men, Take 6, and Rockapella. The Persuasions are the reason a cappella societies exist around the world today.

Season ticket prices are $105/Family (living in the same household); $90/couple; and $50/individual. Adults: $18 ($15 advance); Students: $10. Season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased with cash or check at all Citizens National Banks in Monroe County or with a credit card: 423-442-3210, www.monroearts.com.

Category: Fundraisers and Music

Irish Music and Silent Auction

Jubilee Community Arts will hold a fundraising event to support general operations at the Laurel Theater featuring a silent auction beginning at 7:15 and music by Four Leaf Peat beginning at 8 pm. The auction will offer the work of local artists as well as donations from area individuals and businesses. Income from the auction supports general operations at Jubilee Community Arts.

Born out of Irish traditional music in pub sessions, Four Leaf Peat brings together musicians from various backgrounds. The band is influenced by Ireland’s traditional pipers, fiddlers and singers; they owe a debt to innovators of the music such as the Bothy Band, Planxty, Dervish, Lunasa, and Danu. Four Leaf Peat is Chad Beauchaine on Fiddle; Gil Draper on guitar, bouzouki and mandolin; Rick Hall on hammer dulcimer, bones and bodhran; and Jason Herrera on vocals, bodhran, flute and whistle. Whether it’s lively jigs and reels, slow airs, or songs, the spirit that gave birth to Irish traditional music can be felt in every set.

Advance tickets are: $12 JCA Members, Students, Seniors • $13 General Advance. Fees apply. Tickets (if available) will also be sold at the door the night of the event for $14. The Palace Theater: Claire Lynch and the Claire Lynch Band

  • November 6, 2010
  • 8:00 PM

Category: Music

By any measure, The Claire Lynch Band is high on the bluegrass world’s A-List, with musicians whose accolades include International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Female Vocalist of the Year and two Grammy nominations for Best Bluegrass Album (Claire); Canadian Open Mandolin Championship and Florida State Championship on both fiddle and mandolin (Jason Thomas); the MerleFest Doc Watson Guitar Champion (Matt Wingate); and two IBMA Bass Player of the Year awards (Mark Schatz).
Claire’s musical direction dates back to the days of the Front Porch String Band, resulting in a seasoned sound that is simultaneously unpretentious and richly textured. It’s a down-home, front porch sensibility—until you realize that it’s a rare front porch, indeed, that has ever hosted musicians of this caliber. Ontario native Jason Thomas brings monster chops on fiddle and mandolin, supported by remarkable musical versatility and imagination. The band is grounded by bassist Mark Schatz’s deft touch and masterful instinct for groove. And Matt Wingate is a remarkably soulful young gun whose mature improvisational musicality is seemingly far beyond his years, making him instantly at home in one of the greatest bluegrass bands currently on the scene.
Dolly Parton credits Claire with "one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today." Claire’s harmonies have graced the recordings of many stellar musicians, from Ralph Stanley to Linda Ronstadt. Equally gifted as a songwriter, her songs have been recorded by The Seldom Scene, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea, The Cherryholmes, The Whites and others.
In the Winter of 2005, Claire signed her second three-album deal with Rounder Records. The first release, New Day (March ’06), was a top favorite pick for several publications, scored a #1 song on the National Bluegrass Survey and an IBMA nomination for "Song of the Year". Next came the anthology collection, Crowd Favorites (October 2007) which earned another couple of top ten positions on the survey. Ms. Lynch describes her follow-up CD, Whatcha Gonna Do (September 2009) as "Americana-inflected bluegrass." It took the #1 spot on the January 2010 BMP national bluegrass CD chart and was included in several "Top Pick" CD lists for 2009.

Tickets $15 in advance and $18 at the Door. The Palace Theater is located at 113 West Broadway, Maryville. TN. For advance tickets 865-983-3330 with Visa or MC or from Murlin’s Music World, 429 West Broadway, Maryville, TN. www.palacetheater.com
