In 1924, Charles Emory, Jr., whose family had farmed for decades on a small tract of land adjacent to historic First Creek, made the decision to subdivide his farm and go into the construction business. His land's proximity to the Fountain City streetcar line made it a desirable location for commuting downtown. Emory himself built the first two houses, one of which remained in his family for many years. The house at 1711 Emoriland Boulevard, built in 1925 for Walter L. Morris, has been the home of Bill and Melissa Charles, who have built a large collection of regional art and antiques, including some family pieces, for 28 years. A recent project has been the creation of a garden inspired by the gardens of Charleston. An existing gazebo and fishpond have also been restored. The Charleses invite you visit their neighborhood, tour their home, and enjoy a special meal in their garden at twilight.

Grand Opening for the new Union Avenue Books in downtown Knoxville will be Saturday, June 18. Located at 517 Union Avenue, this independent bookstore specializes in new and used books, plus decorative arts and gifts. The business will be of special interest to the residents, shoppers and businesspeople of the downtown area, plus the faithful of the former Carpe Librum Bookstore which closed in late 2010.

The bookstore will carry a diverse inventory of local and regional titles, fiction and non-fiction bestsellers, and children's books. Union Avenue Books will host book signings, special holiday events, and Saturday activities for children. The store will also be available to Knoxville's numerous book clubs for meetings and after-hours events.

"The U-2 Incident: 50 Years Later" a one-hour presentation by Gary Powers, Jr. about the Cold War, U-2 Incident and his father's (Francis Gary Powers) involvement. Powers Jr. will discuss what is was like to grow up in the shadow of a famous figure, show two 5-minute news clips, discuss in detail, the shoot down, the imprisonment, exchange of his father 50 years ago, and why he decided to found The Cold War Museum. Book signing for Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 Incident; the book is available in the museum's Discovery Shop. Powers Jr. presentation on June 17 at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm; June 18 at 10:00 am and 12 noon in the AMSE Auditorium.

The Creative Arts Co-op is gearing up for another 'Season of Murder'

We open the season with an all-original line-up, beginning with little white collar crime entitled 'Corporate Killings'. Our cast of characters can't wait to meet you -
at least until you start interrogating them. An interactive evening - the show begins when you walk in and doesn't stop until 'justice is served.'
With a zany cast of characters, clue hunts, suspect interrogations, and our delicious dessert buffet, you can't help but have a great time.

Tickets are $20.00 per person and include dessert, beverages, and show.

Korean artist Kwang-Young Chun (b. 1944) began work on his series of Aggregations in the 1990s. Today, he is recognized internationally for these sculptural forms. The basis of his work is individual, triangular, Styrofoam shapes. Individually, these shapes are minuscule. Taken together, however, their visual impact is immense. This concept of the aggregate is what drives Chun’s work.

The Styrofoam shapes are covered in Korean mulberry paper. In Korea, the paper is a mainstay and has many utilitarian uses from floor and window coverings to candy and medicinal wrappers. It also resonates with personal meaning for the artist, who recalls trips to an herbalist as a small child. Medicines wrapped in mulberry paper hung from the ceiling of the shop, the paper protecting the contents from dampness and insects.

Chun uses pages recycled from old books to cover the geometric forms. These pages are covered in Korean and Chinese characters, adding another layer of cultural and personal meaning. He hand ties the paper over each shape, twisting pages into string to complete the wrapping. In this way Chun is able to integrate traditional materials into a contemporary context.

A troupe of actors, escaping the ravages of war, find refuge in an abandoned puppet theatre. During the night, an eccentric old puppeteer tells them the tale of the wooden boy who must learn some hard lessons before he can become real. This unique production will utilize masks and multiple forms of puppetry to help the story unfold on stage as ten actors create over forty memorable characters from the beloved children's classic, The True Adventures of Pinocchio.

The 70 photographs presented in this stunning exhibition are drawn from the recent book, Sudan: The Land and the People, written by U.S. Ambassador Timothy Carney ( the last ambassador to Sudan) and his wife and collaborator, journalist Victoria Butler. Award-winning photographer Michael Freeman spent over two years compiling extraordinary images of the rich ethnic, cultural and geographical diversity of Africa’s largest country. Bordered by nine nations, Sudan holds the key to regional stability and prosperity. It has long had the potential to be the engine of economic development for the whole of northeastern Africa. Sudan’s wealth lies not only in its plentiful natural resources, but in its ethnic and cultural heritage.

For millennia, immigrants and invaders from the Mediterranean and the Middle East have come together and blended with African ethnic groups to produce peoples of great beauty who share a turbulent past and rich cultural heritage. Armed conflict, drought and famine have plagued Sudan since its independence in 1956.
