The Farragut Folklife Museum will host The Frances Abel Memorial Craft Fair at the Farragut Town Hall. The two-day event is free and open to the public.
On Thursday, the community is invited to view arts and crafts from several local artists from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as well as tour the Farragut Folklife Museum, currently featuring an expanded Civil War Exhibit. A special children's event will be from 4 to 6 p.m. including a museum tour, a show by East Tennessee native Mary Lynn Campbell and her monkeys from Sunshine MonkeyShines, and free hotdogs and popcorn.

On Friday, the craft fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sam Venable, humor columnist for the Knoxville News Sentinel, will be the featured guest for a reception and book signing beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a special program at 7:15 p.m. Venable will be available during the reception to sign his books including his newest collection titled, "Someday I May Find Honest Work: A Newspaper Humorist's Life." All of his books will be available for purchase in the Museum Gift Shop.

Celebrating our 8th annual event! The Center provides design and planning services to nonprofit groups and organizations that do not have resources to pay for these services. Requests for assistance are provided only if the project is for benefit of the whole community. We serve organizations that serve others.

The 2011 tour has buildings that have never been on our tour including the St. Oliver and the Daylight Building, plus lofts in other buildings. There will also be new food vendors as well as some of your past favorites.

Mighty Mud's pottery club meets once a month on the third Thursday of the month. It is a great way to work on projects, learn new tips and techniques, and socialize with other artists. 2011 Mighty Mud Pottery Club Schedule:

Knox Heritage’s Architectural Salvage Program will hold the door sale and all doors will be 50% off their marked price. The sale will be held at the Knox Heritage office, the Carriage House at Greystone, located at 1300 N. Broadway. Park behind the building, and the Salvage Room is on the back side of the Carriage House. All other salvage items will be available for purchase, and can be viewed on our web site: http://bit.ly/khsalvage.

While architectural salvage is most often used in restoration projects of other residential and commercial historic buildings, some pieces could be used to add vintage touches to a newer home. Other ideas include art objects or for re-purposing for another use (wooden doors as headboards, windows as room dividers, doorknobs as coat hooks, etc.).

Korean artist Kwang-Young Chun (b. 1944) began work on his series of Aggregations in the 1990s. Today, he is recognized internationally for these sculptural forms. The basis of his work is individual, triangular, Styrofoam shapes. Individually, these shapes are minuscule. Taken together, however, their visual impact is immense. This concept of the aggregate is what drives Chun’s work.

The Styrofoam shapes are covered in Korean mulberry paper. In Korea, the paper is a mainstay and has many utilitarian uses from floor and window coverings to candy and medicinal wrappers. It also resonates with personal meaning for the artist, who recalls trips to an herbalist as a small child. Medicines wrapped in mulberry paper hung from the ceiling of the shop, the paper protecting the contents from dampness and insects.

Chun uses pages recycled from old books to cover the geometric forms. These pages are covered in Korean and Chinese characters, adding another layer of cultural and personal meaning. He hand ties the paper over each shape, twisting pages into string to complete the wrapping. In this way Chun is able to integrate traditional materials into a contemporary context.

A troupe of actors, escaping the ravages of war, find refuge in an abandoned puppet theatre. During the night, an eccentric old puppeteer tells them the tale of the wooden boy who must learn some hard lessons before he can become real. This unique production will utilize masks and multiple forms of puppetry to help the story unfold on stage as ten actors create over forty memorable characters from the beloved children's classic, The True Adventures of Pinocchio.

The 70 photographs presented in this stunning exhibition are drawn from the recent book, Sudan: The Land and the People, written by U.S. Ambassador Timothy Carney ( the last ambassador to Sudan) and his wife and collaborator, journalist Victoria Butler. Award-winning photographer Michael Freeman spent over two years compiling extraordinary images of the rich ethnic, cultural and geographical diversity of Africa’s largest country. Bordered by nine nations, Sudan holds the key to regional stability and prosperity. It has long had the potential to be the engine of economic development for the whole of northeastern Africa. Sudan’s wealth lies not only in its plentiful natural resources, but in its ethnic and cultural heritage.

For millennia, immigrants and invaders from the Mediterranean and the Middle East have come together and blended with African ethnic groups to produce peoples of great beauty who share a turbulent past and rich cultural heritage. Armed conflict, drought and famine have plagued Sudan since its independence in 1956.
