Museum of East Tennessee History: Holiday Open House

Cookies and apple cider will warm the day at the East Tennessee Historical Society's Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 10. Some of the activities include live music, quilting and needlework demonstrations, ornament and craft making for the kids, cookies and hot cider, and stories from Christmases-past. In addition, visitors are invited to browse the Museum Store for a great selection of traditional gifts, history books, and children's items.
Visitors are also invited to tour the new feature exhibition Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War, as well as the permanent exhibition Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee.
Saturday, December 10 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
All events are free and open to the public from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Free admission to the Museum of East Tennessee History is available through January 13, courtesy of a grant from the Arts and Heritage Fund. 21st Annual Christmas Guitar Concert at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts set for December 10!!
A favorite holiday tradition returns to Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts on Saturday, December 10 when guitarists Ed Gerhard and Bill Mize join together for their 21st annual Christmas Guitar Concert. The concert will be held in the school’s auditorium at 8 pm and tickets will be sold at the door for $20. The event often sells out, so early arrival is encouraged.
Sevier County native Bill Mize is a Winfield National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion and is featured in projects and guitar compilations worldwide, including Ken Burns’ series, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.â€
GRAMMY® Award-winning guitarist Ed Gerhard’s music has touched audiences from Tokyo to Rome and venues across the United States. Performing on 6-string, slide guitar or Acoustic Hawaiian Lap Slide, Gerhard’s virtuosity, generosity and humor shine through.
Gerhard and Mize will join together to perform Christmas favorites, as well as selected solo pieces of their own. Fans of guitar music and Christmas alike won’t want to miss this memorable show. For more information, call (865) 436-5860.

Blount County Public Library: Grace Notes Flute Ensemble Concert

Grace Notes Flute Ensemble, with multiple types of instruments and flutists who are professional or semi-professional, will present a holiday concert at the Blount County Public Library on Saturday, December 10, at 2 p.m.
Directed by Dr. Sue Swilley, the ensemble will present a holiday concert, combining classical and traditional music.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

On Saturday afternoon, December 10, from 12:30-3:00 p.m., at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, TN, you will have the opportunity to meet Bill Landry, host of the “Heartland Series†and author of Appalachian Tales & Heartland Adventures. Bill will be autographing his book and chatting with guests.
There will be hot cider and cookies in the Museum and self-guided tours will be free during that time. Check out our gift shop as well for that one of a kind unique Christmas gifts. We have a great selection of books, cards, pottery, jewelry and other Native American made items.

Bijou Theater: Delbert McClinton with Scott McMahan

Singer-songwriter, harmonica player, pianist and composer Delbert McClinton has been an active sideman since at least 1962 honing his craft with such blues giants as Sonny Williamson, Howlin’ Wolf, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Jimmy Reed. He made his first recordings as a member of the Ron-Dels and was noted for his distinctive harmonica work on Bruce Channel’s 1962 hit "Hey Baby." Recently McClinton released his solo album Acquired Taste. It’s the thirteenth studio album in the career of this Texas roots music legend and Grammy winning artist and the first new recording in more than four years.

Shakespeare Outloud returns this Saturday, December 10th at the Lawson McGhee Library downtown at 500. W. Church Street. Join us at 2:00 pm to read “Henry VIII†which seems very timely right now with the popularity of “The Tudors†television series.
Bring a copy of the script and participate as a reader or bring a copy of the script and follow along as an audience member. A limited number of scripts will be supplied. We have had a lot of fun with two readings so far, “Two Gentlemen of Verona†in October and a special reading of “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof†in our Tennessee Williams weekend in November and we are looking forward to reading “Henry VII†at 2:00 pm this weekend.
