Monroe Area Council for the Arts: Carolina Chocolate Drops

3406.jpg

Category: Music

2011 Grammy Winner for Best Traditional Folk Album! The founding members of the Carolina Chocolate Drops honed their talents under the tutelage of old-time fiddler Joe Thompson, a black fiddler with a short bowing style inherited from generations of family musicians. Forming a band, they chose the name Carolina Chocolate Drops as a tip of the hat to the Tennessee Chocolate Drops, a black string band who lit up the music scene in the 1930’s. In 2008, The Drops became the first black string band to play at the Grand Ole Opry. Founders Dom Flemons and Rhiannon Giddens are joined on the MACA stage by new band members Hubby Jenkins and Adam Matta. “The Carolina Chocolate Drops are…revisiting, with a joyful vengeance, black string-band and jug-band music of the Twenties and Thirties—the dirt-floor dance electricity of the Mississippi Sheiks and Cannon’s Jug Stompers.”— Rolling Stone www.carolinachocolatedrops.com

At Hiwassee College, Madisonville. Buy tickets: Adult $20 ($18/advance); Student $10 (Students must show ID at box office). Monroe Area Council for the Arts: 423-442-3210, www.monroearts.com

Bijou Theater: Marc Broussard

3962.jpg

Category: Music

Marc Broussard made his recording debut in 2002 with the remarkably mature independent release, Momentary Setback. He drew coast-to-coast acclaim in 2004 with his major-label debut, Carencro, a full-blooded take on the blues, soul, Cajun music, rock, and swamp-pop of his native Louisiana. With his emotive and dynamic voice, Broussard quickly won over a legion of devoted fans via nearly non-stop roadwork, including countless headline shows; show-stopping sets at festivals like South By Southwest, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and, of course, Bonnaroo.

Clayton Center for the Arts: Foothills Community Players Presents The Dining Room

4208.jpg

Category: Theatre

The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.
